I've long been toying around with the idea of including a Christian message with my magic shows.
What a great opportunity to reach people! Besides, after developing 7 or 8 educational shows, I got really good at constructing a message around an effect. Also, with my marketing and business background, I'm sure I could reach a lot of people with a message that actually gets them to DO something. Be it receive Christ or establish a closer relationship with Him or whatever. Roadblock #1: I didn't know the Bible. I was afraid that people would confront me after the show and I would look like an idiot. God's Solution: He placed me into a Bible study (pretty much by accident and without me knowing! Long story, but a minor miracle) So now I know the Bible much better and even though there's always more to learn, I'm not worried about looking like an "idiot". (I also learned all about pride and humility too) Roadblock #2: Scared to preach the Word. Sad but true. It was out of my comfort zone and I was literally scared to talk about God at a magic show even if that's what they booked me to do. God's Solution: The person that heads up that very same Bible study asked me to teach one day. This is something that he never does and nobody else teaches except for him. I have no idea why he did this. I have zero experience and I didn't even ask for the 'job'. (Another minor miracle in itself!) Now of course, when I teach (twice a month now, yay!) I do TONS of magic and I have no problems constructing messages or speaking about God in that setting. Roadblock #3: Where do I go about booking these shows? (Dumb question, I know... I'm a true newbie) God's Solution: The Magic Café! This looks like the perfect resource... a major miracle! I guess I need to know what kind of church events have entertainment like this. Is there a directory of Christian festivals? Sunday Schools? Catholic Schools? Youth Groups? Which denominations should I target? Which (if any) should I avoid? What age groups should I work for? (I'm really good with younger kids ages 3-5, but I feel led to work for older kids this time 10 and up. Again, that's way out of my comfort zone.) Sunday's Komedy Kidshow Klinic really inspired me to get off my duff and clear this last roadblock out of the way so I can start getting my hands dirty. I would love to know who I'm working for before I develop the show Your help is appreciated in advance, |

Tim,
There are several very well known gospel magicians. A couple have information that will definitely help you out. Try http://www.laflinmagic.com Duane Laflin is AWSOME. He has a book, Greater Gospel Magic that will give you some insights to Gospel Magic. Also, http://www.andrekole.org Andre Kole is another very well known Gospel Magician. He has a very good website. The last I will mention is Felix Snipes. He is my inspiration and the reason I have re-started my interest in magic. His website is http://magic.kendallnet.com and it gives information of where he will be. I hope this all helps. God Bless. John Crosby |

Tim,
I don't have the answers to all of your questions. As far as events that can utilize your talents, your timing is pretty good. This time of year many churches have fall festivals rather than Halloween celebrations. You might try contacting the youth pastor of the churches in your area. If you feel that they may be uncertain about "gospel magic" then try and make an appointment and show them in person what your presentation is and what gospel magic is about. I hope this helps. |

I guess this response is a bit more general. I encourage you not to be afraid to call yourself a magician in your gospel shows. I have heard many a performer say that they don't use that word but call themselves an illsionist instead. I think that that is unfair to them and the trade unless they are actually doing the large illusions.
When I am booked to do magic with a message, I am sure to open all these shows with a disclaimer something like this: "I don't do real magic. I believe that there is only one person in the universe that can do real magic - and that's Jesus. What I do are things that only look like magic. If you had the instructions you could do these too. However, because I create the illusion of doing magic, that is what I call it. And I hope that some of the effects that I perform tonight will look that way (smile). So, let's have fun." Blessings on your journey. LOTHAR |

Invest in the book Greater Gospel Magic. It
has kept me from making mistakes that other gospel performers make. You did not mention if you were looking to book paying shows or working for the purpose of spreading the message. Either way you need this book.
...think not that all wisdom is in your school. You may have studied other paths, but, it is important to remember that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is always more to learn.

Is there a directory of Christian festivals? Some cities do have one. Often on Sundays the local newspaper has a religion section check your newspaper and see what churches offer alternative worship. Quote:
Sunday Schools? Most will allow it. Quote:
Catholic Schools? I've hit road bumps here, it depends on how liberal the Catholic school is. Quote:
Youth Groups? Most definitely. Quote:
Which denominations should I target? Best answer is to know a bit about the religion first. Some may be Christian but have a different set of beliefs, it is good to know if they call the Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, OR Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Some religions are real particular about your wording. Quote:
Which (if any) should I avoid? Give them all a shot, what harm can it do. Quote:
Start where you feel lead, and comfortable. Work your way up from there. Often Sunday Schools will have you performing for their entire School and not just one class, this provides a chance for you to work with the hard as well as having the comfort zone to fall back on. Usually young children are the most fun but at the same time are not conditioned for misdirection and can not understand that something can not float or disappear. They believe anything can happen. This is just in my experience. If you would like to PM me I can work with you more and pray for your outreach. Take care. Quote:
