Does anyone have or seen Richard Turners new DVD?
By adding another spectator and a few more moves, Richard Turner elevates the Signed Card Routine to new heights. Imagine an effect where two spectator's autographed cards, one from a blue deck and one from a red deck disappear, only to have both cards appear and reappear over and over again. The amazement of the audience escalates with each appearance of a signed card; from the performer's hat, under a mat, from a spectator's hat, a wallet, torn and restored, and from a sealed deck of cards. Titillating as it may already seem the grand finale explodes when the sealed deck is opened to expose the spectator's signed cards -- and it is the same card!! Richard Turner's startling Double-Signed Card Routine is for the true sleight of hand artist. It can be incorporated into your existing show or utilized as part of a standup act or a close-up routine. In addition to the double signed card routine, Turner reveals his long held secret -- Turner's Key Card. With Turner's Key Card, you will be taught how to locate a selected card, by touch only, after a spectator has shuffled it into the deck. Also Included are recently found photos, letter, and quotes from Dai Vernon, Ed Marlo, Charlie Miller, Michael Skinner, Fred Robinson, Larry Jennings, and a 1987 interview with Dai Vernon. Additional Moves Taught by Richard on this DVD include: Turner's Two Finger Bottom Deal Force Turner's Invisible Bottom Palm Turner's One hand Bottom Deal Force Turner's Two Card Display into Gambler's Palm or Full Palm Turner's Diagonal Palm Shift to Full Palm or Gambler's Palm Turner's Two Card Spin Around Side Steal, Card to the Wallet Turner's Gambler's Cop and Hand Wash to Wallet Turner's Signed Card to a Sealed Deck Turner's Key Card Twist-out Turner's Top Palm and Second From Top Palm Turner's Simultaneous Top and Bottom Palm |

I received this yesterday and think it is wonderful. Please go the the "Magic History" portion of this dvd. While Mr. Turner's card handling is awe inspiring, what I found (and find) most awe inspiring (were)are the relationships this man had with some very large names in magic history (especially Dai Vernon). He shares some personal correspondence from Vernon, Marlo, Larry Jennings, Charlie Miller, Fred Robinson, etc. Praise is heaped upon this gentleman in these letters yet Mr. Turner doesn't present them in a "bragging" manner. There is a lesson in there somewhere.

What about the instruction?

He teaches 9 individual moves used in the routine, which is performed and taught. He then teaches 5 other palming options (including a top/bottom palm) and a back entry side steal. He uses a mirror under his hands so you can see the work from below. It does presuppose prior knowledge of the sleights however. For instance, one should know the basics of a side steal before watching his technique for the "back enry side steal". He doesn't go step by step , say like Daryl does on his videos, but he does teach techniques as opposed to merely demonstrating them as on "The Cheat" video.
No time for an in-depth review. Hope this helps. BTW, there is also an interview with Dai Vernon from 1987. Best, Fatts |

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the obvious. Richard Turner is almost totally blind.

I don't think he wants to be known as "The Nearly Blind Card Guy". My take was that he acknowledged this and moved on to be accepted on his abilities, not his hurdles.

I bought this new release based on his earlier release, the "Cheat". And, I really bought it, not for the card routine, but to see what kind of teacher he was. Clearly, based on his work in the "Cheat" Richard Turner is one of the formidable card-handlers around - perhaps ever.
No disrespect meant for Mr. Turner, but if I was at the Castle when he performed this routine using his wife and son as his assistants, I might have been bored to death. Clearly some more preplanning and editing could have been used. Perhaps a live performance with lay assistants, but I don't know - unfortunately this is the only performance of his that I've seen, since on the earlier Cheat release on tape, there are only demonstrations of techniques. There were a few brief snippets that introduced the DVD, but they were a bit confusing as to what was happening. I appreciate that he has released this material, as anything of his is better than nothing. It could have been much better however, afterall this will be one of the documents left to define his legacy. The teaching could have been clearer and camera angles more precise, so you could actually see everything necessary to impart accurate information. What impressed me so much with the early tapes was the precision in his handling - this precision should cross over to anything he puts his name to. Otherwise we are left with an imprecise legacy which is not fair to Mr. Turner or the magicians who may be interested in buying in to his artistry.

I finally got this. Its awesome. He is a legend, especially due to his sight. The only gripe I have is that I don't wear a hat, and neither will any of my spectators, so this cuts out 2 phases of the routine, as the spectator wont have a hat, that cuts out the stage of the torn and restored, so I'm trying to adapt it to a card box, and then have the normal box change to a brand new sealed deck. The key card I thing wasnt described enough. If anyone who is bery good at this, can they help a little please? I have the jist of it, but it is blatantly obvious.

Even though I liked his videos series "The Cheat", this one effect is completely insane to my point of view. Too many effect happens, it is difficult to follow IMHO and It takes so long to get to the point that (again IMHO) it gets very boring for the spectator. Some of the moves are interesting though.
My two cents, Yves |

When someone accomplishes great feats against obsticles most of us would use as ecuses, it's inspirational and should be noted. Don't you think that label should really be left up to the person in question. Just saw a great story about a team of college basketball atheletes. They made it clear they are sick of being called "inspirational" due to the detail that they are in wheelchairs. They are a team of atheletes who wanted to be seen as atheletes, not inspirations... Not handicapped atheletes, just normal atheletes who take their abilities and do their best with them just like any other true athelete. Take Richard Turner's lead and don't factor what you perceive as limitations into the equation. In this case it really has very little to with his accomplishments. |
