Frank - thank you for passing on the information. I feel that that is what this forum is all about... The more information that is passed on the more Café members benefit by way of having more choices in products and the methods they choose to study magic.
Thanks again, Glenn Bishop

IMHO, Erdnase was, and still is the best card palmer. His book "Expert at the Card Table" is great. John Carney has a whole section of his book (Secrets) devoted to palming. That section is very good, and goes more in depth on some of the points that Erdnase touched on in his book. Carney also has a DVD on Palming. I am thinking of buy that and his misdirection dvd as well. Definately look into some Carney stuff. I can say I learned a lot from his palming advise. WOW!
good stuff.

Bish,
I have to say I went out and bought the Erdnase book mostly because of you and many others on this forum constant plugging of it and I have to say it is one of the best purchases I have made and all for next to nothing in cost. |

Right on blueboy7948 - If a person wants to do cards it is one of the best buys in magic. But you have to take it in steps. It was one of the first books I started to read on card magic and I am still reading it and it still inspires me.
To be creative one must have a set of rules and principles to begin with in order to be creative. Erdnase teaches this and more. He not only gives the moves but also how to cover the moves to and how to look natural. And that was the achievement of Mr. E.S. Andrews! aka Erdnase!

If you are interested in the Erdnase palms you should get the Bob White Video. There is some stuff on those palms I have never seen anywhere else. I wrote a description/ review in the DVD review forum. I was fortunate enough to see some of the early footage of the DVD and it was enough to convince me.

Card College has loads on the palm. It's got the methods of taking and replacing but more importantly it gives you covers and motivations to hide the actions and holding out.
I don't think palming is very hard at all. It really is about confidence and misdiraction (and of course practicing the take so you can do it smoothly under the cover of the square-up or riffle). I just started doing it whenever I had the chance and when the trick did not depend upon it so that if anyone saw the card I could make a joke of it. But I can honestly say that I have never been caught. People just don't seem to expect it. They are far more likely to disbelieve a false shuffle or suspect a DL. |

Michael Close's "The Power of Palming" is an EXCELLENT video resource for learning to palm playing cards deceptively. Daryl's "Encyclopedia of Card Slights" (volume 6) also has some great material on palming.

There are so many good sources for palming techniques out there(Card College, Close, Erdnase,Carney etc.) one may be hard pressed to define "the best". My suggestion would be to learn the basic palm first, and find a motivation for doing it. Some folks often do sleights and such just because they can without any real reason or purpose for doing it. Palming done well and at the right moment can create a virtual miracle in a lay person's mind. Most lay people either know or assume we as performers palm objects, particularly cards. It is therefore imperative that it be done well and at the proper time, thus alleviating any suspicion.(see JC Wagner's card under glass) If you give palming any object, in this case cards, the attention to proper technique it deserves, you will be armed with a fantastic card weapon which will reward you many times over.
