I've not been too successful with this effect. For one thing it shouldn't be performed with girls (I don't think) and that limits it.
Number two a lot of birthday kids (I've found) don't want to put on the tux. Then you are pretty much stuck. I suppose you could let another kid do it but then the point is missed - of the birthday kid being the magician. Three, it's hard to explain to them how it works and the fact that they should make faces and such when the magic happens. That's been my experience with it. I've used: Pro's Nightmare Sponge ball to bunny stiff rope those cards that fan open and are rigged That trick that uses the plastic tube and rope - it suspends on the rope with a little help (I forget the name) flipping cards into a top hat appearing flowers vanishing deck Anything that is simple and direct and easy. I use an "appearing dove wand." The foam dove "magically" appears at the end of the wand. The funny part is when you try to coax it to fly, then let the wand turn over so the dove just hangs there. Tap it on the head once or twice, make a shrugging motion and then toss it into the ditch bin.

I have seen some very good performers who have has success with this trick. I think it comes down to your personality. The tricks..can be anything..making a thimble appear and disappear. I agree, be very careful doing this with a woman.

I think the music you pick is very important as well. It goes a long way in setting the tone.
