Wow, a PTC coaster with all of the historic nuances yet unchanged, Wurlitzer organ w/ some extra whistles and bells, Herschel carousel, and a Bill Tracy dark ride with an original Tracy facade.
This place is an amusement park museum! Here's a link to an article about the park and the Whacky Shack @ Joyland: http://www.dafe.org/attractions/darkride......land.htm Hopefully, the right buyer will keep everything in one place and intact. If not, the stuff on property needs to find a good home soon. Otherwise, inactivity will take its toll on the rides. Chris |

Yeah...I find it interestuing that they are using Original equipt. (cars) on the Coaster...eveidently there are no lawyers to drum up fake lawsuits in Kansas.
Looks like a real nice place. Hey Todd...maybe we can convince Bobby to let loose with his bazillions?

I wonder if the seller of that park is up for negotiation, it will have to be a long way down though! Doug, I will need a few 'zibits when the deal goes through, the plan is to employ Don driver for the talking, he can pitch outside the coaster on his day off. All the other staff will be dwarfs
In the UK we have plenty of lawyers to invent fake lawsuits, but one of the best collections of original coasters in the world still retains all the original features and cars. The collection is at Blackpool Pleasure beach, anyone who loves classic woodies and other traditional rides (including two superb original carousels) should take a trip there. It is an incredible place. I make sure to go there a couple of times a year, just to ride all the woodies. As well as the coaster often voted the scariest in the world, the totally innocuous looking Wild Mouse, looks like a kids ride, but will scare the sh*t out of you an help your lunch back into the open air in a jiffy http://www.blackpoolpleasurebeach.com/ David

Black Pool has been my ONLY dream destination for as long as I can remember. It's the only place I want to go outside the US (sad huh) besides that is, being invited to New Zealand to retire as a consultant to Peter Jackson...oh and maybe a tour of China to find antiques and antiquities...oh and maybe Egypt to see the real 'goods'...and a few other places where yanks have a target pasted on their back as they leave the airport...
But Black Pool...now that holds a special attraction...I like the idea that it's still mostly independents rather than a one price rides all corporate bore(yawn)...everything I've seen of nasty old Black Pool's jumble of rides and atractions is deeply enticing to an old time Coney rider.

Hey Doug
The ride collection at the pleasure beach has to be seen to be believed. It is truly awesome, you would love it. There are some fun original dark rides too. There is also a live dark walk through, horror themed, just outside the park. A couple of actors dressing as famous movie killers and chasing you around the place and out the back door. At £5 a person they keep people moving through fast (probably a couple of hundred people an hour at peak times) a live broadcast of people running round the shadows screaming keeps the marks queuing. We went in at the end of the day when the street was empty, so we got the place to ourselves and refused to pay more than £2 a head The park isn't independent, it is a one price for all day entry kind of place. But it still retains a lot of the feeling of an independent carny, there are sometimes some excellent talkers on the midway too. Just outside the park is a Ripley's, not a bad collection there, but no talkers, nothing really to draw you in off the street. I tried to get a job there a couple of years ago, suggesting a bally platform at the front, to pull the crowds in, no luck though. By the way, there is a Fiji mermaid there that looks suspiciously like one of yours, I am not sure about the shrunken heads either. Next time I go to the park I will take some pictures for you, and if you ever make it over I will be happy to give you a guided tour. You have to promise to go on the Wild Mouse with me though! David

Thanks David! Having been a show talker at all kinds of venues...glad you appreciate the game.
Interesting that it's a pay one price these days...do you mean that one company owns all that?? Or is it countless independents that lease space or just get a % of the One Price take or what? As to Ripleys...I do doubt it's any of my stuff there...their Shrunky Heads are real (at least all the ones I've seen)...there Mermaids are usually old and the ones I've seen are no more than the 'armature' used to hold the skin and such. Some of them, just wooden forms. I'd like to see a photo of it. Alas as to coming there...it will never be unless I was offered a free trip and board or I hit the lottery (which I don't play...so that's doubtful). Thanks for ther offer though!!!

I bet Premier Parks will pick the place up for half the price. They want to own the world and so far have gotten their hands on *** near everything but Knotts Berry and Disney. It's a shame they won't keep all the classic stuff. It will be chock full of games and high tech coasters. Just call me Idiotdamus.
Anyone willing to take my bet?

Hi Guys,,,lots of posts since last week on this,,,,some of us have to work you know!!
Harry,I was at the Annapolis Fair last October, as a visitor with a mind to make connections for the future,,,they require a DVD or Vid so I have not followed through, yet. In Baltimore last September so it wouldn`t have been you. I have been hairless and beardless for over 20yrs!! Todd, we still have Trains like that over here, they are called Intercity Express!! Yeh Blackpool is Ok and the Pleasure Park is owned by one family, concessions work within this unit on very, very high rentals. Many of the old rides Steeplechase and Grandnational etc have all been upgraded to safety requirements so the guts are pretty new. Out of the new attractions the Big One or Pepsi max is a one dip over too *** quick ride,,,but that near vertical drop is a brown trouser job. Valhala a dark water ride is something else, you gotta try this one. Way back we did a season with Doctor Death on the South Beach, usual Blockhead,Fire,SJ as a come on made a heap of cash with its extended season (The Lights extend the season through October) Applied for the following year, but they trebled the rent so no go. The Gypsy Tellers are forking out around £30000 for a doorway pitch (And there is a waiting list for availability) So what`s that about $60000 a season.Ripley`s close and open again for the lights, they have to,the same family who own the Pleasure beach own most of the front concessions including Ripleys as well, also the Skating rink,African show, the Sandcastle and beach rides which are oposite the Pleasure Beach. I think with the Vegas theme coming to Blackpool that a lot of it`s original tinsle will die, the novelty of fish and chips with peas and mint, the wearing of Kiss me Quick hats and half naked girls freezing to death in October out trying to sus the lads will proberly be replaced,,,,,such a shame. |

I haven't been to Blackpool for a few years now, but I agree with David Straightjakcet; the mouse is a scarey ride. It's not so much the ride itself (although the corners are impossibly sharp), more the noise it makes. The sound of the wood creaking underneath the weight of the cars and a clunk-clunk-clunk-clunk-clunk noise getting progressively more urgent as the ride speeds up.
Kevin.

Kondini, Man oh man! I don’t know how I missed you! I managed to get to a couple of the October Fair weekends. I was there for the last day, close of fair. Of course that day was cold and rainy. October has the distinction of being either hot as heck or cold and rainy depending on wither it is the first of the month of end of the month.
You coming back this year?

Have worked for Four Seasons Ren Fairs in the UK for the last 14 years so I know a little bit about it and I am half authentic (English). We went on the Sunday, it was a warm sunny day must have been around the last week in September. Had a great time. |

Many good acts,,,names!!!!
Johnny Fox really went down well and came across as pro. The wenches with large **** kept taking my eye. The Craft section was crap. The variation of food astounding. The numbers attending even more astounding. The Jousting was pretty accurate. A good day all round, but the US sense of humour!!!! No sarcasm!!! Oh and I liked the Elephants as well?? |
