Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knows the contents of Slydini's "Encores" CD-Rom. I am sure, since it is by Slydini, it will be wonderful, but a list of contents would be very helpful. Thank you Eva

I was checking the Café for a review of Encores but can't find one.
Is it recommended reading? Adam |

Thank you, Xiqual.
I am thinking the Imp Pass may be something I have seen on a Gary Oulette DVD, but not sure. I have also done a search but can find no reviews of "Encores" on the Café. Thank you for you time. Eva

Slydini's Encore book was the 1st book published by Harry Stanley's Unique Magic Studio back in the 1960's. It is all Slydini material and if you can convert the Slydini style to your performing style, then the material is well worth reading. Slydini was a master artist and his work is always worth studing.
His second book was The Magic of Slydini also published in England. Tannen Magic published a 2 Volume set that recaped many of the original material with more photos and discriptions. One volume was all photos and the other the text. The Encore CD-Rom is an inexpensive way to read and study his material. It is all sit down material, therefore not much good in the 'real world' of performing magic. He was the lapping expert. |

Wasn´t The Magic of Slydini by Lewis Ganson published first? In this book there is no Imp Pass and no Revolve Vanish. So the Routines were not the original ones which were performed by Slydini. As far as I know this was the main reason to publish another book, which was Slydini Encores.
I think this is a beautiful book worth reading for every magician. |

This book is the follow-up to the Ganson book, hence the title "Encores". It is required reading for anyone wanting to understand close up, or standup magic. Contrary to popular belief, Slydini's work was not all designed for seated work at the close up table. The material in this book reflects this. Capricious Cornucopia, Ball Vanish in the Hands, Long and Short of It and Thumb-Tipping are all done standing and mainly on stage.
The advice he gives on managing a thumbtip has become standard. For seated close up work, the imp pass and the revolve vanish are legendary, and the "One Coin Routine" has inspired many variations. All the coin work in this book is worth careful study. There is one caveat: all the material is based on gestures and timing that was natural for Slydini. You'll have to adapt his techniques to your own mannerisms and style, and it will probably be quite a longer stretch for a woman.

Bravi, Eva.
You might also want to note that Tony Slydini was not very tall. When sitting at a normal table, the edge of the table would almost hit him in the chest. This makes a big difference in what rest positions are natural. While you're waiting for the book to arrive, you might want to play with the position for the Imp pass, and see if it's workable for you. The position is: Torso facing about 45 degrees to the left, perfomer has his/her right arm resting on the table, with the wrist to the elbow resting flat, and along the table's edge. I can imagine this working, perhaps following a moment of confidentiality where you've leaned in and said something directly to a person to your right. Good Luck with it.

I think I may be taller than Slydini was, then! Thank you for the Imp Pass tip.
I will let you know how I get on with the Slydini material. Eva

I have received my "Encores" and it is very interesting reading.
I am wondering if the ball used in Capricious Cornucopia is what I have heard of as a "hank ball". If it is, I would very much like to know of any resources that are available which explain its use to vanish objects, etc. I am working in front of the mirror and practising this beautiful ball vanish/production. Curtis...I am working on the Imp Pass! Eva

Eva,
The ball Slydini used is a bit larger that what was usually considered a "Hank ball". For the basics on the use of the hank ball (which was generally a rigid ball with a large hole, and used with or without the loop) you might see "Rice's Silk Encyclopedia" or the appropriate Tarbell Course. Capricious Cornucopia is a terrific piece, and one I performed as well. I have to admit, however, that Gary Kurtz gets about the same illusion in a better context using some of the Jerry Andrus material. In the Kurtz routine, you form the cornucopia and then toss in a yellow lemon and a red tomato. You swirl the cone, and red and yellow become orange, an orange, in fact. See "Unexplainable Acts" by Kaufman. I am interested in your progress with the imp pass. Perhaps you might post a video once you have something?

Eva,
On Cellini's "Magic that can be Performed Anywhere", there is brief film clip of Slydini performing the "Capricious Cornucopia". And, after that, there is a long explanation of the Slydini moves by Jim Cellini. In addition to being an outstanding magician in his own right, Cellini was also a student of Slydini. This DVD is an outstanding DVD of simple magic that is devastating in impact. Highly recommended. Tedb (Koz) has previously mentioned that he is in the process of compiling a Tribute to Slydini DVD that will have a bunch of the Slydini film clips on it. I think Tedb's latest ETA for getting it ready for sale is this Christmas season. I, for one, can't wait. Mike

That Kaps coin in hankie trick is a worker. Always gets the "Oooooooos" and "Ahhhhhhs"
I use it now with a kid and tell a story about Harry Potter and the wizards not having any pockets. I use this trick to show how they keep thier money. When the coins reappear, I hand the kid the invisible coins one at a time and have them throw them at the bag. A good time is had by all. James
