Hello to the Café Crowd. My name is Jerrine and I have been doing research here for about a month now. Spent most my time in the Sidewalk Shuffle, as a matter of fact I have read every post from Oct 10, 2001 to the present. Found a few users whose advice appeared to me and others to be valid, so I did a search on them and read all their posts as well. I gotta hand it to Steve, this forum is a wealth of information. Not only what's a good idea, but also what's not. I've also been impressed with the little amount of squirreling around, i.e. flame wars, rude posts, etc.
I'm in my mid Forty's and have had a deck in my hand since about six, been tinkering with magic about that long too. I received a Magic kit as a kid that set the hook. Ball in vase, plastic cups & balls, fooled & fooled again gaffed cards, etc. I'd see people do card tricks and work them out myself using moves that I made up. Saw an old Magician, who I can not name, on television do Paper balls over the head. I soon was able to duplicate the move and get laughs. After my new found interest in the Art I found that the things I did with cards were not original moves. It shed light on posts I'd read about who did or said what when, and who should get credit. Always been an extrovert, able to tell a joke well, and think fast on my feet. Growing up in household of women, four sisters plus Mom, and Dad traveling 5-6 days out of seven, timing was essential if I ever wanted to get a word in edgewise. Oh, and yes, my toilet seat was down. Wouldn't say I was a class clown, knew I would get tuned up when Dad got home, but have always been a funny guy with a wide sense of humor and able to make people laugh. As far as gainful employment, I've milked 135 head of cows, created satellites, tubes for the space station, and other nifty things from fiber enforced metal matrix material, sold clothing for both sexes, Chiropractic Assistant, managed several fast food establishments, tossed a lot of pizza pie, sold pipes and tobacco, telemarketed selling things, setting appointments, and soliciting funds, worked the graveyard shift at what I affectionately dubbed The Porno Palace (XXX movie theater and "novelty" sales), and other less glamorous occupations. I purchased Mark Wilson's Cyclopedia of Magic for $1 at a second hand shop when I went in just killing time looking around about a year ago. It rekindled my interest in Magic and that combined with the wonderful WWW has led me here where I have decided to add Magician to the list above. From what I have read and what people have always told me ("You should be a comedian." "You should right that stuff down.")I believe that I have the personality to pursue a career in entertainment. I'm good with my hands and my mouth (easy there) and have the ability to develop magical skills beyond those I have now. I've invested in the Triple Classic CDROM primarily for Bobo's Modern Coin Magic, but have learned much from The Royal Road to Card Magic and Annemann's Practical Mental Effects. I also invested in Brother Paul's Trio and a set of Cups & Balls from Adesso Verlag. The Complete Cups & Balls by Michael Ammar should be arriving any day now. I'm a quick study, understand vocal and physical misdirection, and have begun to develop a character so I will be able to wear scrubs and a Lab coat that I have left over from my days as a Chiropractic Assistant. Easy to clean, and looks by nature professional. I believe that the psychological impact of the Lab coat and it's various pockets will assist me. I've worked out a bit where I pretend to listen to the heartbeat or breathing of a person with a stethoscope to determine a card or a lie. Anyhoo, thanks again to Steve for the forum and all those that so freely share their advice and experiences with those such as me that strive to be Magical, and successful in the quest to put smiles on faces and make minds wonder. |
