How do you guys get emails from clients. I'm listed on Gigmasters.com, AllTimeFavorites.com, EntertainUSA.com, and DirectCatering.com. They send me leads, and it is my job to contact and book them, using the above email. Which in fact, I can see how it can be a little intimidating, but for me (personally) that is what I want to do.
The whole part of "I dare you to ask around..." I know there are others who offer Guarantees, but in the small pool of magicians who actually take the time to send over 3 emails and call at least 2 times, it comes off more as a challange. So basically, how do you advertise and get bookings from those leads, if you do it that way? |

That shows you take your business seriously, and that you want to increase your success rate. Well done! Next, I agree with Jim with the philosophy of getting customers to call you, so you can ask questions. This builds up their interest in you, as you show interest in them. I find that I sell better over the phone than by e-mail, so I set up my "response mechanism" (I use a submit box on my site rather than an e-mail link) to indicate that I will call them, and ask outright for their name and telephone number. A question I did have for you, Nick, is based on something that I saw for your response to their e-mail. That it was brief and to the point. But, do you use such a short script when selling on the phone? If not, then that could be your problem. You could be doing more "selling" on the phone, and that makes the difference in the return rate. You could try a longer script (if you are really stuck on the idea of doing an e-mail response) for your e-mail reply, that is closer to the wording that you would use in a phone conversation. Don't be afraid of a long letter. They are responding to your ad (website), and have a genuine interest in what you have to offer. If you make it interesting, they will read it. Another reason that a phone conversation might out-pull an e-mail response (from a birthday mom, for example) is that birthday moms tend to shop around for the lowest price... Unless... you can "prove" to them that you have something that is worth paying the extra for. Sometimes this "proof" is not only in the words you use, but in the enthusiastic and genuine way that you deliver your script to them. They can hear that enthusiasm, catch it, and that motivates them to buy (selling is partly based on emotion). So, therefor, a live conversation will tend to out-pull an e-mail or letter, sales-wise. Hope this helps you find the solution that you are seeking. - Donald P.S. Another thing you will want to fix in your e-mail copy, if you continue to go that route, is to make sure and take the period off the end of the url in your letter (or at least a space before using the period). You put a period on there because it was the end of a sentence, but in doing so, you made it a clickable link that doesn't work.

Hi Josh:
I email market. I'm not a phone person. Now I'm not a man with a lack of words, some would wish that I was. I just don't do well selling on the phone. I do well selling by email. I use AllTimeFavorites myself. I have sold one by phone and one by email. The one by phone was easy. They generated the lead on Monday for an event on Saturday. I was probably the only one who responded. They had decided they wanted a magician and I was a magician. It was two phone calls. One to discuss their needs and offer a price once I knew them. Two for approval of my quote. The email was sent directly to me. They wanted a Hypnotist, I wanted to do Hypnosis Shows. That was my first show and they will never know that. They voted to have a hypnotist, I responded and fit into their budget. In two weeks with back and forth emails I was booked. They had high expectancy and I gave them the show they wanted. All selling boils down to they tell you what they want and you provide it for them. I booked a fair for a good price and by email. Those in the know will tell you this isn't how its done but I did it anyways. I was corresponding with the President of the Fair Association. He wanted what I had and a couple other things, I threw in those extras and I will walk away with a nice profit come September. I have never talked to this Fair President by phone only by email. I also got something else that they say doesn't happen. I got a deposit from the fair to hold the dates. I'm also up on their website as an attraction for this year. I'm also working on the local Fair in my county for my Hypnosis show. This one is a matter of personal relationships. I've known the guy who runs it for years. This one I'm willing to do for a low fee and bend over backwards to obtain it. One it gets me the Fair gig under my belt for Hypnosis Shows. Two it gives me the local exposure in my market. The schools will want to book the Hypnotist from the fair. Three if I don't get it no one else was going to as they had already done their booking and contract signings for the year. It all comes down to rapport and you can develop that in emails, on the phone and in person. I just happen to prefer in person and emails. I lead generate by email the same way some will do with post cards. I wanted fair bookings so I sent an inquiry email to fairs in the states I was willing to travel to and those that raised their hands I sent promotional material. Now even this was via email. I turned my promotional material into PDF files and attached those to my email. Why did they raise their hands in the first place. Good question. My lead generating emails did one thing and one thing only, Tell them what I do and point them to my Websites. I got lots of positive comments on my websites and many emails letting me know that my email was forwarded to the person in charge of entertainment. I also got a number of requests for promotional material. Did I get the outcomes I wanted. Yes and no. I got a couple of fairs but I shot myself in the foot and didn't realize it. I believed all the hype in the hypnosis circles that you get all this big money and should only book for this big money. Well aparently the fairs haven't read this book and I over priced myself right out of work. So you have to make sure you do your research along with your marketing. I'm doing some I'm going to be in your area anyways so I have a special if you book me now. I'm not going to be in their area but I want the bookings. I'm giving them a price more in line with what they expect to pay and playing it up big how much of a draw a Hypnosis Show would be for their event. Sorry for the long post. The point is that email booking is no different from any other type. Lead generate, find out their what I wants, provide it for them and fit it into their budget. There is room for all types of marketing. Some want it on the phone, some in person and some want it via email. More and more are doing it by email as they don't have to feel so intimidated. But if they take the time to write they are interested. Remember it is a bit of effort to sit and write an email. One last thing, I figure out what markets I want to go after and then I look up the websites and use their contact email with my lead generator. Martin

Another thing you might want to track, Nick, is what type of customers respond the best to a response e-mail. You see, you have been getting lots of suggestions by people who say they book by e-mail, but they are talking about corporate shows and festivals.
Those customers are different than a birthday customer, and behave in different ways. In fact, with each market (type of customer), you will find that you can sell to them in a different way. Also, generally speaking, females are looking for more information to make a (booking) decision than males need. And most inquiries for birthdays, come from the birthday mom. - Donald

Thanks Donald, you really do know your stuff!
People might like to go to http://www.funnybones.com.au (which is my agency) or http://www.funnybones.com.au/trickynick (which is the 'tricky nick' part of the site.) and follow the process that people get to before they submit. The website is VERY succesful at getting inquiries (enquires?) but I'm just having trouble sealing the deal! |

I think one of the better things you can do for yourself and your website is ti keeop track of the4 statistics on your site. This being things like, how many hits you get each day to what pages in the site seem to be getting more hits then others.
By looking at the later information, you can determine which pages the viewer tends to go to most and this may not be where you think they are going or where you want them to go. You can learn a lot from this and change or test out site variations to see if it changes the way people navigate through your site. Just a thought. Kyle
