Vernon, Grippo, Jennings, Marlo, and the mysterious Bill Bowers! What a group. I knew all of them, lucky me...
This is a great photo. It was one of very few times that Marlo ventured outside of Chicago. He hadn't done so in decades, then in 1983 (I think) his old friend Ron Bauer got him to do a convention on the West Coast. He and Vernon finally got together. There is a picture of that historic meeting in one of the Vernon Chronicles (number 2, I think), with Vernon, Charlie Miller, Marlo, and Bauer. That started Marlo touring for the first time in years. He went on to do several lectures, and this Desert Seminar. One of the early effects that Larry published, "Reaping the Aces", was the result of a meeting that Bauer set up for Larry with Marlo. It was an all day session, in Chicago, just before Larry left Detroit for Hollywood, back in 1964. So, you can see that Larry was right at home in Marlo's company, as well as Vernon's. He certainly had great mentors. And he fit right in as you can see from this photo... Then there is Jimmy Grippo. Jimmy was a fixture in Vegas for more years than most people can remember. He was also a hypnotist, a boxing promoter, (He handled at least one world champion, lightwieght, I think), and all-around good guy. His brother Jan worked in film, and managed the Bowery Boys at one time. Now that's old Hollywood! In fact, Jan did pretty good magic too. Some of his stories were hilarious, especially when he got to talking about the movies and the "Dead End Kids" films. Leo Gorcey was quite a handful, I guess! Jimmy was the magic star, though. He did things that are still baffling the experts. There was a book on "The Magic of Jimmy Grippo", but I'm afraid an awful lot of the things Grippo was noted for were not included. Maybe we'll see another tribute with more detail - what do you say, "you know who"? Everybody knows who Larry and Dai are, and where they stand in the magic world. But who's that Bill Bowers guy? Well, I only met Bill a couple of times, but he was incredibly gracious everytime. And he was a great magic fan! He was very supportive of Vernon through many trying times, and he has supported the Castle and Magic in general for as long as I know. Bill is one of those guys without whom magic would be much poorer. He works behind the scenes, doesn't look for credit, just does what he can (and that's turned out to be quite a lot!), for the love of magic and the folks who exemplify the art. Whether you know it or not, Bill Bowers has probably made it possible for you to enjoy magic a little more than you would have otherwise... Best, PSC
