I am more than certain I can say Doug Henning has had an impact on
you...either in watching or performing magic. Here's a way to say thanks to Doug. The Canadian Walk of Fame is a looking for nominations for the next set of stars. So far the walk has stars for names like William Shatner, Jim Carey, Shania Twain, and Walter Ostanek (come on you know Walter...the Polka King!)...anyways...I really want a star for Doug on the walk and you should too. I don't have to list the reasons here...you have your own... So how can you help... Well take a minute out of your day to go to the following site and enter Doug's name. At the bottom of the page you can even submit up to 50 words on why this icon of magic should get a star. The form says it is for 2005 but it will still be recorded for 2006. http://www.canadaswalkoffame.com/inductees/nominations.xml Why am I doing this...because it should have been done years ago. * This is not limited to Canadians or magicians so why not take an extra minute to write an email like mine to your friends and ask their help (or forward this one)... I know ...you're like me and you're thinking ...everyone else will do it so why me... because no one will do it except you! In 2002 a friend of mine tried this and a whole 7 people responded! Geez it's Doug Henning...take just a moment...please Thanks, Shawn Farquhar 2003-2004 Canadian Magician of the Year PCAM President Society of American Magicians RVP for Canada a guy who got his start in magic watching Doug Henning! http://www.magiChampion.com " When I was born the Doctor slapped me and I said 'Pick a Card'!" I put his name in. I hope they don't get annoyed that I consider "Rhode Island" my "Province." They asked for the "full" name of the nominee, so I entered "Douglas James Henning." If people entered "Doug Henning" would the entries be disqualified because it wasn't the "full" name?

I think by "full name" they just mean first and last name -- so someone couldn't just put "Henning". Regardless, if you put Doug Henning, Douglas Henning, Douglas James Henning, etc., they'll know who you mean (particularly if you fill in the reasons for your nomination).

Shawn - I also submitted. I was 12 years old and just getting my first taste of magic when Doug's show Spellbound started getting attention in Canada (Copperfield also hit the radar about the same time in 'The Magic Man' in Chicago). When rumors of a Broadway show starring Henning started to surface, I couldn't wait to see it for myself.
I believe it was May of 1973 when 'The Magic Show' previewed and critics said it wouldn't get out of previews. I was crushed as my parents promised they would take me to see it during summer vacation. But regardless of what the critics said, people kept attending performance after performance. For the longest time, it was SRO at showtime. And most of the press was focused on Doug's new approach to magic. I often wonder where a lot of today's 'workers' would be if Henning hadn't taken a chance and spent his own money (and borrowed money too!) to produce Spellbound which led to 'The Magic Show'. Because it was only a few years later (Dec 1975) that Mobil sponsored the commercial free, prime time 'World of Magic' which brought our art 'back' into the mainstream of entertainment. I believe Copperfield would have successful regardless of Henning, but Doug made it a whole lot easier for David and others. Anyway, thanks for bringing this to our attention and keep us informed on the outcome. Regards, Anthony Tuccillo Sebastian, Florida

Hi all,
Well this is my very first post on this site, and it is fitting, considering that Doug Henning was the very first magician who influenced me as a child. I can still recall watching his specials on TV and being absolutely amazed at what I was seeing! I instantly fell in love with the art of magic and was hooked ever since. Doug definitelty deserves this recognition and I was happy to nominate him for the Walk of Fame. Thanks Shawn for posting about this! |

When I was a kid I used to draw a mustache on my face with a black crayon and say, "Hey, I look just like that magic guy on T.V." I really liked Doug Henning. He was inspirational- so positive.

Hi Shawn,
I put his name in. When he performed Gypsy Thread and rolled that coin on television, I knew I wanted to be a magician. Missed you at CAM this year. Brian |
