Looks like my silly post is only leading
folks astray. It does contain two clues, but Stephen's hint (June 23 2:31 p.m.) is what turned on the light for me. (So that I don't further lead folks astray, "turned on the light" is only a figure of speech and has nothing to do with Stephen's puzzle.) Stan Alger |

Did you manage to sort out your ego problem, Stan? I know you were without it for a while...

Mike Paris was the one who first mentioned toilet.
Stephen confirmed that the building was indeed a toilet. Now, two posts up, Stephen drops another clue. I'm tempted to offer a clue of my own, an anagram of my name, but my last clue(s) only served to muddy the waters, so it's probably best that I butt out. ("Muddy the waters" and "butt out" are only figures of speech and should not be construed to have anything to do with this puzzle or with toilets.) Stan Alger |

You say that, Stan, but the phrase "I butt out" is a good description of the answer...

Did the sign say "To let out"? Or "To let"? Was it the "i" that was missing?

Spot on!
The sign actually said "To let", and was missing the letter "i" Now have a try at part two...

Vandy Grift,
Yes! Here's the clue (that's an anagram of my name) that I decided not to post (until now): ALTER A S GN I think you noticed my other two "clues": "Looks like you'll have TO LET us work on this one a bit longer, Stephen. I've been so distracted thinking about this puzzle, I've LOST AN IMPORTANT LETTER and my boss is going to kill me." ...and Stephen's missing ego (I) reference together with his spotting of my (unintentional) "I butt out." Looks like Stephen isn't giving us any rest. On to part two! Stan Alger |

Stan,
Yes, it was Stephens clue from 2:31 pm that got me thinking about what the sign might have said coupled with your post about the lost letter that finally made it click in my head. When I finally hit on "to let" as a way of saying for rent I had it. You guys are good, I enjoy playing along. This one really had me thinking. Vandy

So the letter I is gone from to let which would make toilet. so add an I to stan's anagram "Alter a s gn" becomes "alter a sign". the missing thing indicated was the letter I that someone took off or it fell off. "To Let" must be wat was on the sign. but it's not a very good indicator of "for rent". unless it was a "port-o-potty" in which case the sign might say "vacant".
