Do any of you folks get the miles that I've been getting the last few years on the old gag "taking your thumb/finger off"? I took some time to set up a good removal, and restoration. It makes people freak.
Some people do say "Oh, I know how you did that. My Uncle can do that one." But when it hits them, oh, it hits them _hard_. If you don't do this, figure out a good approach and try it out. You'll be surprised to the number of people who don't know how it's done. Best regards, Casey |

I did it to my 6 year old nephew. I did it with a TT. he said" I know how to do that". I said" fine, then you can have it. I then tossed the TT to him and he ran screaming.

That would be a great move to do after the "thumb penetration" of course then you want to finish by showing a TT in your other hand.
great ideas guys Al

Carney does a deceptive bit where he puts a finger ring on his thumb before pulling it off and the audience then sees the ring on the pulled off thumb.

I met a gentleman at a magic shop who had the ultimate "pulling off" gag. After watching him perform a few things, he went into the old bit we all know. The difference was, he never restored it! It was only then that we realized that he really was missing his thumb on one hand. All the magic he was doing, and not one person ever noticed.
No trees were killed in the making of this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

Yeah, I was at my girlfriends, brothers house for thanksgiving. And I did some spoonbending stuff. Later, we were downstairs in the entertainment room, with the whole family (15-20 people). The kids were messing with me. And I have this move that I do where I can pull off my ring finger. It's like the thumb move, but different. It's accually a little uncomfortable, and could probably give me arthritus, but I don't do it enough to cause any major damage. Anyway, after a while the kids pulled the aha... I know how you did that. Then they went wait, what? While they were trying to figure that out, I then remembered I had a TT in my pocket. So, I told my girlfriend accross the room that I was going to take off my thumb and toss it to her. She didn't really know what I was going to do, as this whole thing was impromptu. So, I took off my thumb tossed it to her, she caught thank goodness. And then she tossed it back. The adults went David Blaine balistic!!! The kids were just stunned, with a half frozen smile (like did I just really witness that). And I was amazed that as a seasoned magi that a prop I'm afraid to use professionally, do to its over popularity got such an amazing response. It just goes to show you. That we never know what's going to blow the minds of an audience. Old props new tricks. The magic really happens in the minds of the onlookers.

TTs, Svengali decks, linking rings - often overlooked, but when performed WELL (or in a plain unconventional way, such as you described) can be anything from crowd-pleasers to jaw-droppers. I saw a 4-ring linking rings routine on YouTube today, and it was so well-handled that it almost convinced me that I didn't know the secret, despite having owned two sets of my own for over 10 years!

Why not combining it with the cut off thumb... where you cover the thumb with a napkin and then let it be cut off by a spectator with sharp scissors? (to be found in Gardner, enc. of impromptu magic)

Willard the Man Who Grows (featured years ago in Ripley's Believe it or Not) finished his show (he was quite elderly and unable to drive) had me drive him to and from shows a lot... anyway he did the spiel about "bloodless surgery" and did the thumb off gag... then showed his THUMB WAS OFF.
I had known him for years and never knew he had his thumb amputated from a workshop accident years before. I nearly fainted when I saw the thumb off, that I had THOUGHT was there moments before. He showed the good hand and turned to switch to using the other.

I totaly use it regularly now! I was shocked when I fooled someone with it, like, REALLY fooled them. (i kinda invented this twist move to go into it, which helps it)
either people freak out with it or they think its a joke and laugh on a related note, check out Meir Yedid's Finger Fantasies, really cool stuff! (good alt. version of the thumb trick) |

You beat me to the punch Steve, Meir Yedid's Finger Fantasies is an excellent DVD and credits Joe Monte among other masters of this branch of legerdemain.
He also teaches you how to remove your little pinkey. Pete... what a funny story... man you have the stories!
Mediocrity is greatly under rated!

I saw (the great) Irv Weiner do this at a lecture about 25 years ago , it surprised me! I've used it ever since and it always elicits "ooohs" , "ahhhhs" and "gasps". In fact recently while recovering from triple by-pass surgery in the hospital a lady that had heard I was a magician said: "ok ,if you're a magician show me something when you don't have anything" , I paused a second did the "Thumb thing" and was a little surprised when her eyes opened wide , her chin dropped and she she said "how'd you do that , do it again". (which I didn't) So don't ever write these little "moves" off. Alan
