Hi all
I have just purchased the e-book from Michael close, wow over 650 pages full of material, only had a quick flick through and so far I like what I see, what are your fav effects from this series that you use on a regular basis, I like Frog Prince and Erma La Force so far, but I am sure there are plenty of others, please tell. |

My absolute favorite is Dr. Strangetrick. I'm not sure if the book does this effect justice. If you see it on a video or DVD, you'll know why I like it so much. I think Michael Close is one of the best THINKERS in magic today. I don't think he's one of the best PERFORMERS or INVENTORS, but he really tries to think about everything he does in a magic performance.

If you do any memorized deck stuff, The Wishing Trick and The Smiling Mule are both great.

I did not find very many practical items in this series. I was going through the effects and for many of them you need a long list of items that are hard to find just to do a trick. Some of the tricks are good, but I also agree with Caleb- He's a good thinker but not the best inventor.

I think that his effects are great. I like so many of them but the first couple that come to mind are dr. stragetrick and lie detector. Many other gems are in there though!

I like the frog prince, Erma de la force and dr. strangetrick is probably my favourite. The routine with the birthday card is also very good. His stupid travellers is hilarious.
I think Micheal Close is a great thinker and performer. He really connects with his audience. Watch the routine with the saltshaker, a masterpiece of misdirection in my opinion. |

Sorry I was vague. I mean for close-up restaurant type of work or just any type of close up magic with minimal preparation and reset. I wish I would have known that before I bought the e-book. However, there are some effects I will use. I just don't think that it was worth my money.

The Card, Salt Shaker and Forehead routine!!! This is the best. All of the segments are modular, meaning you can stop at anytime and not fell like you are in the middle. "Mini Climaxes" all over the place. It is hilarious. If you can see this on his DVD's or in person do so. It is a piece of work to be relished. Not extremely complicated, but well thought out and it is just darn entertaining. I also like Down for the Count. Great investment man..

I have found many wonderful card effects in Michael Close's workers series.
Here are some of my favorites... The Card, Salt Shaker and Forehead - I agree with Jonathan on this one! Butte Ox? Two Butte Ox! - One of my favorite cards across routines. Erma La Force - Strong magic, with funny patter. Dr. Strangetrick - Excellent card warp patter and presentation. Reverse Logic - Nice modular routine which can be performed strolling. Pink Floyd - Simple and direct color changes with a nice story. The Frog Prince - Very memorable routine. It doesn't get much better than this one! Also, his work on the memorized deck is fantastic such as... Smiling Mule - Very disarming. Invisible Deck - You can hand the deck out after this effect. The Birthday Book - Very memorable. Tut Tut - The faro does it all. Great stuff! Take care, Rich

I don't use a single effect from the series. However, this is one of the most valuable collections I own.
To me, Close's essays on magic alone are worth the price of the whole set. His ideas on memorised deck work are stunning, but more importantly (to me) are his lectures on presentation and misdirection. Also, we get his observations on well-known theories, for example on Crossing The Gaze and Double Crossing. And then there are the sleights. I use the MC Double Lift all the time for other effects, not to mention two twists on coin moves and his techniques on the bottom palm. I've always planned to use "The Imagination tester", but I've never gotten round to it. But even if I never use a single effect, I'm overjoyed I have the books. Ian |
