Hi guys
What with various threads about suspended escapes, I thought I would start one about the fuels we use for burning the rope. Personally I have tried several different methods. Using just kerosene, kerosene and naptha (lighter fluid) mixtures, and using white gas. I have also been considering giving fire gel (as used in food heaters at buffets) a go. I have not got any one method I am particulary set on. Everything I have tried has its advantages and disadvantages. Some of the things I consider when looking at burning rope fuels are below. 1) Obviously. It should burn for as long as the escape takes. 2) It should burn bright, clear and as fierce looking as possible. 3) Does it drip on the performer? While still burning!? 4) How is it applied to the rope? Soaked into the rope itself, or onto added wicking? 5) Does it light quickly? 6) Does it stay well lit in windy conditions? So, does anyone have any thoughts on this, any more things to consider perhaps? David

Once vacation comes in July, I hope to experiment with kerosene and "Thick-It". If you have ever done a liquid suspension using a powder you have used thick-it. It is used at nursing homes, etc. to thicken foods for people who have trouble swallowing.
My understanding is that soaking the rope causes it to burn through faster. Thin flammables tend to drip down onto the performer. So, a thickened kerosene applied to the rope just before lighting ought to (it says in small print) burn ON the rope for sometime before it actually burns THROUGH the rope and it should stay with the rope rather than dripping downward. I have another idea which will add to the safety of this escape but it probably shouldn't be discussed in open forum like this. PM me if you want to share ideas beyond the fire itself. Clyde |

Hi Clyde
Never heard of thick it, I will look out for it. I wonder f there are other similar products around which might perform the same task, without harming the qualities of the fuel. Quote:

More into what we look for in the various fuels that are available, and what we try to avoid. Sorry, my initial post could have been clearer. Cheers David
