Since this is July forth coming up, do you know any Illusions that I can use the Decleration Independence. How to use it in a Trick.

Mean, old man tears up Declaration of Independence, only to have it re-appear, as strong and powerful as it ever was...
I have found that I do not suffer from insanity... instead I rather enjoy it! : )

If you mean STAGE illusions, you might consider "The Book of Life" Illusion with the Declaration written out inside the book. Read aloud up to: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Pause at the word "Life" and allow a small group of children holding hands to exit from the book. Pause at the word "Liberty" and allow a woman dressed as the Statue of Liberty to come forth from the book. After the words "pursuit of happiness" you could have people of various ethnicities emerge from the book and fireworks in the background and flag waving and a whole lot of fun going on.

You could do an incomplete torn and restored, look at it, shrug, look at the audience and say, "Not on MY watch!" and complete the restoration, then reach inside and produce a string of flags!

You could show the thing, then have it change to a more modern manifesto where instead of the signatures there are corporate logos. Nah... better NOT to get the audience thinking. When in the course of human events we find TV to be a soporific and ..
You should keep in mind that this artifact of the 18th century is venerated and is not truly suitable for direct inclusion in light entertainment.

Interesting idea, especially now that the DVD of "National Treasure" is out. This could generate lots of ideas...
Instead of using the document itself, you could do a thing on Ben Franklin and some of the other signers, or something on Paul Revere (lanterns?), or something with tea, or Boston. Or with a bell. Or maybe tear up a "British" document and restore it as an "American" one. To get around the flag PC-ness, just use bunting (like they hang on balconies) or red-white-blue ribbons. A real flag at the end would be nice; just make sure you handle it appropriately.

This isn't a trick but more....factual information to share...
Years and years ago (before my birth- I am still a youngin') My grandfather worked for Toledo Glass and wasamongst a crew of three selected to help preserve the Dec. of Ind. (They built the marble stand and framework it sits in to this day). The other two men on that project have passed away now; however, my grandfather still travels around sharing the fascinating story of how they preserved the documents. Did you know that the documents rest in a gas filled frame with a constant flow of ( I believe he said it is helium that remains at a certain temp.)gas through it. Also- it sits ontop of 13 sheets of two-ply toilet paper! (They didn't pick the number for any reason, that is just how it ended up) There are other amazing facts about it but I thought I would share these with you all and maybe it will come across your mind as you develope your patriotic patter for your Constitutional Magic... Bryan I've never tried but if you google for the info, my grandfather's name is Louis Gilles.. he still lives in Toledo Ohio. |
