Going all the way back, the older idea was to get a named card to rise from a pack of cards.

I can't tell you the first time it was recorded; however, David Berglas has made it a signature piece. In England, it is often called "The Berglas Trick."
Berglas has never released his version to the market. There have been many solutions in recent years, though. The Nikola system booklet describes a method of doing it.

Check out John Born's in depth study in his new book. http://www.johnborn.com

The oldest one as far as I traced is 'The Acme Card Trick' by Chas. Shepherd in March 1908 issue of Sphinx. The effect is exactly of ACAAN. I think this trick has a relation with Tamariz' version in Mnemonica in principle.

The classic ACAAN, which Berglas does is this: The deck is brought out before anything happens. The spectator thinks of a card and names it. The spectator thinks of a number between 1 and 52, and names it. The deck is handed to the spectator, who counts down to that number, and there is his card. Or the magician counts down to the number and there is his card. This sounds impossible. However, this is what Chris Pratt did for me about 25 years ago. Impressive.
