Hey, I have noticed that there is a wide range of people that enjoy seeing magic. What type of people do you look for when you are on the streets? Also, should you act any different or pick different people if you have a video man with you?

Hey I've never tried with a video man yet (I'm going for it next week) but here are a few toughts.
First of all I admit most people can fit into categories, but there always is exception. I've heard a lot about old people being less able to enjoy magic. This couldn't be furthest from the truth. If you're polite with them and present something with a lot of enjoyement, they are very supportive. Big groups of lads can react a lotif the 'leader' shows enjoyement (screams, running away...) My advice try to make everyone participate and pick up who is the leader, make a trick in his hands or so. Great reaction. Kids are amazing but somewhat difficult to work with. End up clean, don't rely on misdirection too much some just burn your hands no matter what. Having said that, the greatest thing I found in street magic is that I can approach such a wide range of people, talk to them and get to know them a little bit. We all enjoy it -I guess- and I propably wouldn't have meet them otherwise. So unless you're taping it and want to go for the loud people, don't necessarily go to people you fell you'll be at ease with. Try to approach the very next non busy person. Don't do what I just did in this post : DON'T CATEGORIZE. You'll be surprised Works for me anyway! Let me know what you think!

One of my favorite groups, believe it or not, is the gang-banger types.
I think it's the age and it's because they're usually in a group of 3 or so at some event. They're harder to approach, because they're just so tough and everything but once you do one effect that just blows them away (Which we all can do) they break down immediately and are a fun bunch. They love seeing each other get fooled and start pushing and slapping each other, calling each other stupid b**ch. But if the magic is good, they refocus quickly to see the next miracle. I would probably not be doing much with linking pins or things that they could grab and run away with (like my mike rogers baseballs) but cards are perfect for them. They are also (like any kids this age) are wanting to catch you so they pay very good attention which I find helps with misdirection instead of making it harder.

Frank--
Do you find that a group of bangers makes some folks wary of stopping to watch? |

When do you know that the "banger" or person isn't enjoying the magic and you should leave. - Evan |

Wandering around with a friend who has a video camera, approaching groups or clusters of people to perform for isn't street magic. That said, perform for everyone you can rope in.

So it bears the question: did you read the thread? And if so, why are you not employing the more accurate terminology of "guerilla" magic? As opposed to the general and non-descriptive term, in this case, of Street Magic. |
