They say mentalism is a lot like magic, but after performing a few times back when I started getting into it found out the hard way this is definately not the case. I have noticed that is more about the persona, the aura that one gives. Yet some people swear is the methods, and some swear is the psychology behind the methods.
In your Opinion Mr osterlind, what is the most important thing to master in order to become a good mentalist? what makes one mentalist more enjoyable than another? this is a very heated topic at times perphaps, but will love to hear your points on it. thanks for your time and thanks for your contribution to the mentalism community. BTW, lots of good wishes from several of your good fans out here in Baghdad...even have a few practicing with me regularly nowadays thanks for the little joy that you are able to share via your videos-- Art

Art,
Thank you so much for writing. I do appreciate it. OK, this is the best advise I can give. Whether it be magic or mentalism (or any other type of entertainment where you communicate with your audience) you should first master the art of talking to people in an interesting way! I have often said that you should be able to carry on a conversation with folks for 4 or 5 mintues without doing anything and just have them like you. If you can do that, anything you do after, either magic or mentalism, will be well received. One important point. (And I can't stress this enough) Your biggest enemy is your own EGO! Anytime you come across as egotistic, you are on the road away from the hearts of your audience. This is why I try to avoid talking about any "powers" I might have as a mentalist. I don't want my audience to think I am on a different level then them. I want then to think they can conquer the impossible, too! Richard |

It must be harder to perform in the military environment, where the 'different levels' are visible on your collar device! Seriously, all the best to you-- we support you.

Art, sounds like you've found a great way to relieve some of the tensions of being in the line of fire. Keep up the good work.
And thanks for your service to the USA and the people of Iraq! Geoff

Art... thanks for your service to our country... I know how important it is to have something like magic (or any entertainment) skill... That kept me from going crazy when I served (even though I got lucky and never got into a combat area).
