There was a recent post about small imaginary coin routines in which I posted the following... I got no response, I am not sure if it is because the thread was too long or if my idea was lacking in some way. I would really appreciate feedback if anyone would care to help. My question is, in the "bonus effect" below, is it too early for it? Am I justified in using this to cover the handling? I realize I am new here and that this really is a rather simple effect, but I feel I need to work on perfecting a few pieces and making them my own before moving on.
I will just say the effect here as to not give anything away, if you do like it and would like to use any part of it do feel free. The version I do can be 3 borrowed coins and has a nice bonus effect in the middle that I feel covers the handling quite well. EFFECT: First a business card is taken out and a prediction is written down with a marker, the prediction is sealed in a coin envelope and handed to the spectator. The marker is then left in full view. Next, the 3 different coins are displayed and the spectator is asked to make a selection. At this point you stop the spectator and remark that their selection is an interesting one (played off as an "are you also psychic?" or for a Derren Brown style "you may have been influenced while I was writing my prediction because look here...") You ask them to total the coins that they did not pick and then trade these for the marker which has been in view the entire time (no switch is made, there is only one marker.) Next, I like to patter it's remarkable as I just got this pen at the stationary store... you ask the spectator to check the price on the marker which is found to match exactly the amount given to you. Finally, you ask that the spectator mark a side of their coin and then ask them to remove the envelope. The _spectator_ opens the envelope, verifies there is only one card inside and then reads the prediction. The prediction, of course, shows you knew both the side and coin they would choose. The spectator can keep the business card prediction, coin, and even the marker (if you would like) as a memory of the performance. I came up with this handling based off of Maven's P/N for a couple of reasons... - I want this routine as an opener/opportunity to hand out your information which P/N only allows for 50% of the time (and with the weaker ending too.) The fact that your business card and prediction can be kept is so key in my opinion. - I found people were not all that receptive to imaginary coins, it comes off as a bit of a strange request when first meeting someone. - Use of real coins leaves evidence of the feat and for a few cents (if you are using your coins) you give them something they can keep. - I liked the bonus effect idea as it is 100% and works every time. For those of you who know how it works, I think you will also realize the value of the bonus marker price as it gives further reasoning behind your actions. It gives a feeling to the spectator that they also a prediction themselves (without even knowing it) and they made the right choice. Alternatively, you can take the credit and say you influenced them and have the evidence to back it up (this handling was inspired by Derren Brown's Logo trick) - No sleights involved and nothing is gaffed, everything is not only examinable but you can give it all away. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Also, what kind of effect would be a good place to move on to from here? |

It certainly sounds interesting. On the plus side, there is a double prediction and there are supposedly no sleights or gaffs. On the other hand, there are so many props (the coins, the envelope, the prediction card and the marker)that you might as well just use a gaff already.
The double prediction is also very interesting. Elliott |

Thanks for the reply Elliott.. I understand what you are saying about this, the envelope should be eliminated, this does not change my method but I definately now agree that the envelope may be the "one prop too many." The rest are the only parts needed and that is a better way to perform it, I thank you for the suggestion!
The envelope did serve no purpose anyhow (to the mentalist's point of view) but telling the spectator not to peek could serve the exact same purpose. I do agree with your statement to narrow down the "props." I will keep working on this as I really want to perfect a P/N routine... to me it comes no better, it is a prediction effect to be made anywhere and a prediction written on promotional material. |

I think you made a wise by ditching the envelope. When I mentioned “props”, I was specifically thinking of a gaffed Piatt envelope that I once used for this effect. I think that, with some clever wording, you managed to accomplish the same thing using the marker. Very nice!

I must admit, I took notice of your use of “proper quotes”... any reason you use them?

I saw your other post and it inspired me to drag out my Maven tapes and review the video. I like your presentation of this. They can keep the card.
I like it! Dave

I like this effect, perhaps move onto a coin in hand routine, or a serial number devination.
One day I will write a book

Sorry for the confusion... by “proper quotes” I mean you are using the “ and ” symbols rather than the more common " symbol. The commonly used (") symbol is actually an incorrect usage as it is meant to signify inches (in the U.S.) as in 12" = 1'
In other words, you are one of the few people who use these correctly. I have a background in typography and design so it's just one of the strange things I pick up on when I see them used. I myself don't even take the time to do this as it is so widely accepted. To bring it back on topic.. umm.. perhaps it would be a clue for cold reading or something. Could also mean the person composes their message in a word processor before posting... ok I admit stretching bringing this back to mentalism, but it was just something I noticed and liked. |
