Hello I have a invisible dove harness, two pockets, and a few CD-ROM videos on the way. So what breed of doves work best in magic?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think they are called "Turtle Doves"

Turtle doves are a derivative of the European Collared dove which is brown or sandy colored, sometimes on the pink side. They have longer pointed tails. Most breeds I've heard magicians using are Java, Barbery or White Ring Neck doves.
Some, myself included, use what's called a Pied dove. These are white with grey or brown markings.

I think some of the doves they use are Snow White Ringnecks.

Ok, so this answers my own question from another thread...
Here's yet another question (that was probably already asked and I just haven't found that thread yet...) What should a Dove cost? Ballpark figure will work here. Thanks, Prof. Piper :juggle:

$20 per Snow White Ringneck dove is what I was quoted by a breeder here in Wisconsin.

Thanks Daniel!!
I spoke with Dave Hamner today, he's going to try to put me in touch with someone local to get a bird from, so hopefully I'll have a Dove to get to know soon!! Thanks again, Prof. Piper :juggle:

Prof. Doves can cost anywhere from $10 to $30 depending on who you buy from. You can usually get a good deal from other magicians. Dakota Rose is very reputable and is a member here at the Café. You might want to try him as well.
I'm assuming you have done all the research and studying associated with raising and performing with doves. There are many topics here about that.

Magician 336.. I would hope that you have a cage setup. A supply of food. Money put away for vet bills, tolerance for cooing, and of course... patience. It's not something to just jump right into. I know when I first started a few years back I didn't want to hear the constant rambling of experienced magicians telling me that I'm not ready for the responsibility, but as you get them you start tor realize how right those magicians are.

Thanks for all the help/info Dave and Brian...
Dave, I am starting on my journey of research (I've already noted many of the materials you and others have suggested and am going to be collecting them soon)...I've also, as I stated, spoke with Dave Hamner...He's going to try to help me get ONE bird... My plan is this: Since I have a great deal of experience with animals (Both domestic and wild, including a variety of birds) I'm going to get a Dove and get to know it's habits, learn how to care for it, bond with it, and see how the time-management works out with our already small zoo of animals (8 canines, two house-cats, and a parakeet)... If, and only if, everything looks like it will work and I've reviewed all the materials (not to mention any and all advice I can gleen from Dave), THEN I will make the decision as to whether or not I will venture into Dove Magic... If it all works out and I can perform with birds, GREAT....If not, then I will have one more precious friend to love and spend time with, whether they 'work' or not. Again, thanks so much. Prof. Piper :juggle: P.S...As it should be obvious, after listing the numbers of animals we have, you should realize that we have a GREAT relationship with a wonderful Vet here in town....Our babies go to the doc more than WE do....LOL...What we'll do for our babies....But I wouldn't have it any other way!!

Hey, I,m wondering if anyone knows where I could buy some doves around the L.A. area. Thanks.

Note: Doves must be purchased in pairs. They do not do well alone. Most breeders only sell in pairs. Neil Foster told me to purchase 'Java Doves' never found any. I even purchased several books on doves that were not magic connected and they did not even mention this as a type of dove.
So I finally purchased Ring Neck doves that were breed by a breeder. You could hardly see the ring, because he was breeding for a long time. |

Bill, I disagree. I've had, and still have quite a few birds that are singles. They do just fine, are healthy and are actually my some of my best assistants. I know several magicians in the area that only have 1 bird and I've never heard them mention any problems. Maybe we are all just lucky or maybe they get enough attention that the idea of being a single doesn't enter their tiny brains.

This is what the late Doug Collins of Mich. informed me of when I purchased my birds. He always sold pairs for $25 or $30. He refused to only sell one. As he was a breeder I had no right to doubt is knowledge.

Bill, I lived in Michigan for quite some time and knew Doug as well. I know this was his practice and I've found that many breeders will only sell in pairs because they don't want to end up with a single bird. I wasn't saying that the information was incorrect, only that my experience showed differently.

Java doves is the correct answer. These are the ones that are pure white and you see used traditionally in most fine dove acts.
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.
