I'm not sure where to post this so feel free to move it.
How would you recommend finding other magicians at your school? Post flyers all over the school? Not exactly a reputation maker. Wear a t-shirt saying "I'm a magician, are you?". That's tacky if you ask me. I know someone is going to say, just look for people with cards or wait till you see someone performing. Magic is who I am, what I do, so it is hard to relate to others, and finding some more magicians who go to my school would be awsome. I mean, I can't be the ONLY ONE.....can I? BTW, I'm going into high school.

Dan,
Magic is what you do, it's not who you are. You can have a great love and appreciation for magic, but it should never define who you are. That's too static. Take for example Chess Master Josh Waitzkin. He never let chess define who he is, but he has a great love for the game and is still very active in the chess world. Now as for finding other students who are into magic, ask the school if they have a magic club or start one yourself. Look to see if you have and IBM rings or SAM assemblies close by. |

Dear vmendoza,
How did you know my name?! Please AIM me magicianmw. I am the president of the SYM of Newburgh. But everyone in the club is far away and doesn't go to my school. Please AIM me so I can talk to you about starting a club at MY SCHOOL. Thanks.

You may want to check with the school librarian to see if there are any magic books in the school library and who may have checked them out most recently. I don't know what the privacy rules are but back in the Stone Age when I was in school you still used the little cards at the back of the book where you would actually write your name so tracking people down was easy. Also don't be surprised if you find no one who does magic - we are in a definite minority when it comes to extra curricular activities. Finally, don't forget to check out the teachers - you may just fine a teacher who not only likes and performs but might be willing to act as an advisor to a club.

Dear Frank,
How should I go about starting a club? What should and shouldn't I teach? I just came up with a great idea. I could put a letter in all the teachers mail boxes asking if any of their students are into magic. But you had a great idea to for the library. I'll look into it, and the least I could do is tell the librarian to give my contact information to anyone who checks out books on magic, or maybe put a note inside all the books for the person who checks the book out to contact me.

Didn't mean to startle you, but you have your information in your profile. You could also use this are a free lesson in mind reading. Listen to what Frank has to say... talk to the faculty and tell them about your interest and ask them to advise you on if and how a magic club can be started at your school.
Frank is also right about finding other students with your zeal for magic. During my high school days, I only met one other student who had a similar passion, and that was after moving through three different high schools. There are a lot of people that might know a couple of card tricks, but those that have a real desire to learn about magic as an art as much fewer. |

Dan,
I got your PM here is my reply. I'd suggest staring out maybe looking at some videos of magicians performing - no secrets but just try and build some interest. You'd be surprised at how easy it is to wiggle some magic into assignments especially oral reports, speeches, demonstrations for science or math etc. Once the word gets out that there is this cool guy who does magic, others may seek you out. You may offer an after school class in magic or beginning sleight-of-hand. Find a teacher who will help out and you will be able to put out some flyers. Tricks to start with should be simple if you are doing say a class - something from "Magic for Dummies". People who take the class are potential members for a club. I was a teacher when I started a club. We only had five members but we met weekly, and everyone either taught or practiced trick. We even went on a field trip to a small regional convention one summer. They were called "The Cadabras". Check with related clubs such as the drama club. Perform for the members of the school newspaper and the yearbook. Who knows on a slow news day you might be some other students featured article. Most of all have fun. Even one other person to talk magic with is something to be cherished. Let me know how it works out and best of luck to you. Frank Tougas

If you have any good tricks, then just perform for people at school. If there are other magicians around they will appear when you start doing magic. I designed, built, and performed my own metamorphisis, with a friend of mine in High School, for the entire student body at a pep rally. It got a great reaction and I met a couple other people interested in magic. I was not by any means popular in high school but I still was well recieved for performing some good magic and being humble about it. That is the one thing I learned about performing magic in High School: Be humble. Best of luck.

Also a good way to meet other magi is to just perform. During your lunch or if you have a free period or befor school. Also basketball football games and other sports. You will more than likely find someone else who dose magic or someone who is interested that you could teach or take under your wing. Just an idea. Oh and I don't know what type of person you are, but when I was in school I was not the most popular kid. So if you get people to know you via your magic your popularity will go up and it wont kill your rep.

Me & a freind atrted a magic club when I was at Winter Park High. We needed to get a teacher to 'sponsor' us, and we needed to have a president, a charter, and at least 6 members. After getting the teacher sponsorship, we put out a notice and a message over the morning announcements and 13 people showed up to apply. The auditions were simple "step up & demonstrate your powers". Some had simply come without any skills exp. at all....just wanting to see & learn tricks I guess. We had 7 members (not counting myself & Al)by the end, and the others were invited to come back once they'd learned a trick or two.
We had lots of intensives, where we'd brainstorm ideas & share tricks, and we started magic-grams at school....delivering flowers / letters to students via magic. It was a hit!
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

Personally, don't you think being the ONLY magician, is actually a blessing in disguise?
Think about it. Cheers. |
