As a part of my regular 5 day a week business I attend large numbers of Auctions. Recently I purchased (for pocket change I might add !) a large number of various sized Neo Magnets. Amongst the package were a couple of very large ring magnets 60mm dia x 30mm thick. These guys have so much power it's freaky, they are almost impossible physically to separate. Holding one in my hand for 10-15 minutes makes me feel quite nauseous. I contacted a magnet supplier here in Australia who reckons they must have been a special as they certainly do not stock anything that large.
I'd love to be able to create something with these "specials" - any input would be much appreciated. I am a cabinet maker by trade so constructing something around these would not be a problem for me. |

Hi Russel, good to see another aussie.
What about a table containing one magnet and box with the other. A secret mechanism in the table can turn the magnet over. You can have the box which cannot be lifted off the table. Then after moving the table magnet, the box that cannot be put back down. Ian (Melb)

There are a few others on here living in Australia. Missy Magic, Kim Van Weert, Patrick Cordier, Mayntooth and myself are all living in the Perth area.
Welcome to both of you! |

The box you are talking about was created by Robert Houdin. It is really amazing as an effect. But it is hard to keep the complete secret, because they will say a magnet did it. It was a good idea though, trunk8.

Hi from another Aussie (from Sydney!) - it is good to see so many of us in the Café!. I would think that if the magnets are that strong they would be most effectively used to move a larger object around on a stage (if that is the sort of magic you do) - you could have things flying across the stage (carefully!). I can't think of anything specifc off hand (it is very late) but I would think that you should go for the bigger effect - also it wouldn't be so obvious that it was a magnet. Perhaps think about using the repelling power of the magnets instead of the attracting power - it might not be so obvious - ie something substantial floating in mid air?
Hope this helps - do let us know what you come up with! Cheers Kaz |

Sorry, I forgot about Robert Houdin's idea.
Thanks for pointing that out Wikiro. So I don't lose face, how about a magnetically controlled stone and excalibur? You could have the magnets stick to a steel sword blade. Make them strong enough so that the blade would not slide across the face of the magnet. Or make a wooden sword with the magnet built into the crossguard. Easier to make that a fake stone would be an anvil. Ian

No, I just didn't want you to look bad. I'm sorry, I just remembered it was an effect by Robert Houdin.

Dear Wikiro, I am not offended at all. I was a bit embarassed as I have read Houdin's book and should have known better.

You are talking like me, stop it.
I'm the only one that should be embarrassed.

Houndini's trick didn't use a device that turned a magnet over, it was simply an electro-magnet wich was turned on and off.

Just a thought. If holding it makes you nauseous, you might want to have the gauge level checked. It IS possible to cause harm with a high magnetic field..... and keep it away from the TV and computers!
If you have it installed in a table, you should be able to suspend or support an object (wooden) with a metal pin in the tip, and balance things atop. Or suspend them from beneath: rings that spin, metal spheres, etc.

Yup, I have a few NdFeB magnets too. They penetrate the thickest tables and affect TVs from 1m away. Anyway, you can get resonably sized Neodynium Iron Boron magnets from old hard disks. Just open them up and you'll find a powerful one inside. PM me for instructions if you need them.
By the way, does anyone know any good uses for these neomagnets, or a way to use them in a magic effect? |
