Cane Juggling...
Does anybody know if there are any references to juggling a cane. It is a really neat art that involves flipping the can all over the place in a very impressive, organized mannar. The cane is caught on arms, and shoulders, and then spun and caught, balanced on fingers and spun, thrown, flipped, caught...it is just really cool. I think it would go well with magic. It facinates me and I have taught myself some of the techniques, but I am interested in taking it a step further... I think one of the best cane jugglers I have seen is Scott Hitchcock. DOes anybody know any videos, or books that teach anything about cane juggling? I would like to be able to do an entire 10-15 minute comedy routine with nothing on stage...just walk out with a bowler hat and a cane (one of the wooden round top canes that old people use). The bowler hat would be used as well. I plan to incorporate lots of byplay and slapstick humor as well. Thanks, ~Kyle~ |

I've also wanted to do this once. When I was trying to figure out a routine with this I thought it could be cool to use a dancing cane or a vanishing one for magical effect.
You know you are a magician when you have boxes full of lecture notes you have never read, but still are excited about going out and buying more.

Well, it could not be done the way I want to do it with a vanishing or dancing cane. The dancing cane could be done with it but it would have to be the cane I was referring to.
To do some cool moves, you have to hook the "hook" part of the cane on your arm, and shoulder and stuff...then spin it. and then catch it. I suppose you could do a routine with a bunch of different canes....call you the cane man! |

The book you are looking for is "manipulative miscellanea" by Reginals W. Bacon a.k.a. "Mr. Slim" and Brian Dube sells it for $10. at http://www.dube.com. This is a juggling book, and has some great hat manipulation tricks too. It does not cover the dancing cane. Al

I was looking up some tap dancing terminology this morning and ran across this dancing site http://www.offjazz.com/vid-hat.htm with a few videos of cane manipulation. There are several spins and routines that might give you a some ideas. The focus is dance, not juggling, but what is a label anyway?
Also, try Home Of Poi - http://www.homeofpoi.com. They have a bunch of free online staff lessons and a DVD called Art of Staff. The focus is a straight staff, but there might be some inspiration for you there. Back to dancing, Fred Astaire does some cool cane manipulation in Easter Parade with a hooked cane. Judy Garland sings. Ann Miller dances. A good time is had by all. |
