I was in one of the Station Casinos in Las Vegas last night visiting some friends that I hadn't seen for years and one of them asked me if I still did magic. I told her "yes" and she asked me to do some for her boss. I said "sure."
Well, her boss was none other than the Casino Shift Manager (the Pit Boss's boss & acting Casino Manager) and she managed to bring a couple of the Pit Bosses to watch.
I'd already had a couple in me, so I decided to keep it pretty simple. She gave me a deck of used cards straight out of the pit podium. I asked her if she liked magic and she said "we'll see." I thought to myself, "yes, we most certainly will."
I developed a "happy-tipsy magician" routine out of thin air. I relied heavily on my favorite old Garcia and Lorayne bits, worked it to where she herself cut to the aces, and built that up into some Triumph-type bits using the same four aces. After the appropriate pauses and interactions, I ended on a short, sweet, and simply stunning ACR.
I was met with "screams of silence" by all except my friend. She was giggling and said, "See?"
I asked her boss, "isn't magic fun?" All she said, "Now, how the h#$% do you expect me to let you continue playing the games?" I chuckled, thanked her for her time, gave her back her cards, and spent the next 30 minutes talking to her about everything while everyone went back to work. She even bought me another drink. Nice lady. Fun night. I love doing magic in casinos.
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy;
The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,
And I've a many curious things to show when you are there.

Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain,
For who goes up your winding stair
-can ne'er come down again.

"Screams of silence", what a great phrase.

One of mine too, along with "tied in knots."

In reflecting on this event, I think what made it memoriable was the fact that it was all done with their cards, the casino's cards that came straight out of the podium. Although used, they had yet to be cancelled.
