I was wondering, when you perform flourishes do you use a new deck, one you may use for fanning, or an old worn out one? I find some things are hard to do with new decks because they're too slippery, but that may just be me. I just want to know what y'all do.
new deck old deck

I like the feel of new decks, the way they fan really evenly when just taken out of a box. I keep em in order for a while, then shuffle the hell outta them... after about an hour of breaking em in, I kinda feel the nostalgia, then put them back in full deck order again
I like a nice, worn in deck for performing with. It's just like a tool that has conformed to the shapes of your hand. It's wonderful -Kev |

New deck. At least with a brand new deck you know it will be good soon. With a worn out deck, you know it's not going to get any better.

I like a deck the best the day after I open it

Old decks don't slip around but they have their large disadvantages. They look bad, all scuffy and crappy around the sides. They don't fan. They get sticky.
New decks are much nicer because once they have been broken in a bit, they don't slip but do fan and look nice. |

I tend to use brand new cards all the time. It makes it easier for me to do fans and do all kinds of cuts.

I think the ideal period is between 1-5 hours use - broken in and not too stiff but also not covered in grime - how does all that black stuff come off my hands anyway?

I'll use any deck. I prefer old decks, I feel that they are far easyer to manipulate and you can make them do whatever I want. I have no problems in fanning old decks. the fans aren't 100% but seriously.. I don't care if one "pip" shows more than the other, aslong as the fan looks good from a spectators view. I can fan it so that "every" pip shows but no need to be perfect. it's the fan itself that's the impact and aslong as the spectators can see that it's even and nice, why should it be any better.
I HATE totaly new cards, they are too hard and slippery. I use FP on new cards but I don't re-powder when it wears off. "that's how I roll" |

Not a big fan of new decks. They're generally too stiff and slippery for my tastes (although I opened a recent pack of bikes and they handle like a dream. Moreover, ALL OF THE CARDS ARE CENTERED! It's a goddman miracle.)
Several hours of use and they're good to go for me. I used to snap each and every card to get them "right". Generally speaking I would prefer to use an older deck.

New decks are slippery . I didn't like them at first either. but in time I got used to them . for flourishes , I definetly prefer a new deck.

With fans I like em new but broken in a little. Easy on the powder.

I must admit that I do enjoy the smell of a new deck, but rarely do I use them except for breaking them in. I like em juuuuust worn in enough to fan perfectly, and do some balancing acts like the king cobra.
