Greetings all, I am wondering if I should get a gaffed or non gaffed strait jacket, but before you post please read the following.
During the routine I will have something in my hand like a deck of cards. Usually people say that it is always good to go for the ungaffed but does the fact that I want to be holding something make a difference? I see that there is a very good viking strait jacket out now. What are your opinions? Thanks

This will get one heck of a response, and is a hot topic in the Esccape world.
I say non gimmicked, but in your case, you don't need to sell the escape as much. It matters what you are doing, for your reason of wanting one, gaffed. Houdini

Hi GG,
When you say you will be holding a deck of cards. Will this be through the canvas on the outside of the sj or will the cards be on the inside of the jacket? Also, will you be planning on doing other stuff whilst escaping? I'm guessing you're going to be doing some kind of card trick. Take care, Ros

If you want to get into escapes seriously, you need to be able to do a variety of jackets, real and gimmicked. There are advantages to each, and you can only learn by experience with both, how to deal with eventual problems.
If you're doing it as a one-off, go with the gimmick. If the audience doesn't care, why should you? It's a show.

I really wish I was going to be at the convention in October. I will be touring.
I would love to show some folks why the "real thing" is not the way to go for a show. Unless you are performing for yourself. I will say again there are many ways that a person can really mess you up, and a good three minute bit takes 20 minutes to pull off. The entire audience will be gone or asleep by then. More to the point, you can see he is going to try and hold something. The real deals are too thick for that. Twisted testicle..... ...nuff said. |

Do a search on this topic. You will find that the gimmick/no gimmick jacket has been discussed at length before. Look for Mark Tripp’s posts on the matter (in fact read and print out all of Mark’s post, he’s given an entire book on performance here on the Café over the past couple of years!).
I am a performer first and foremost. I will call myself an escapologist for theatrical purposes, but really, I’m just an actor/performer. My job is to entertain, maybe to thrill, maybe to amaze, but always to entertain. I have both gimmicked (belt/belly loop Posey) and semi-ungimmicked (humane) jackets. I can get out of both. I use both in performance. I say semi-ungimmicked for the one because one piece of it has been subtlety modified in such a way that even the manufacturer of the jacket will not notice it. It passes the most rigorous inspection yet acts as if it is gimmicked. I have had several knowledgeable EA’s examine the thing and it has passed their inspection as ungimmicked! I guess that tells you where I stand on the issue. I am all about using a gimmicked straightjacket. A good presentation and good audience management and it fly’s. I don’t have time for the macho BS stuff in my performance. I need to be about entertaining my paying audience. Back to the top, find and read Mark Tripp’s thoughts on this prop.

Hello friends and thanks for your input.
To answer some questions, yes I want to hold the deck in my hand and than put the jacket on (and than escape out of it) . I am not an escapeologist for this is the only escape I will be doing, instead I am a comic magician and the strait jacket will play as a comic "prop" if you will to my comedic card trick act. Therefore it is not a feat of escape that I will accomplish but more of a "dangerous card trick" (phrase used for laymen) In the parlor act, there is no time to examine the jacket, but I would also like to do it on the streets. Now this brings me to the conclusion. How examinable in the gaffed strait jacket. Can someone hold it and look around in it? NOTE: this is not the type of effect where I would call up a security card to check if it is real. Thanks again for all the replies and I hope none are offended by this post.

I would not let someone "walk around" in a standard gimmicked jacket. But that depends on the gimmick really. Some of them are quite examinable while others are the complete opposite.
If I were you I would use a medium or large Posey jacket with roller buckels without belly- or sideloops. /Ark

I think that pretty much any sj with no loops would be good. If you get something like a humane jacket or a posey as mentioned above then you won't really need it 100% gimmicked and it will be totally examinable.
http://www.cannonsgreatescapes.com and http://www.mighellsillusions.com are pretty good places to start looking. Both offer impecable service and fantastic professional props. Of course if you can find someone near you with an sj so you can try them on then that'd also be a good idea before buying your own. Good luck, Ros

All right guys I did a little more research on the poseys and I have a question.
The descriptions usually say can pass brief inspection with proper misdirection.....what does this mean, can I have the spectators look at it for a little while or does that mean they just cant climb in it? Also, one of the jackets come with instructions on how to make the gimmicked jacket ungimmicked. Would this be the best way to go so I can have both a gimmicked AND ungimmicked jacket (if that's what they mean.) Thanks for the help

This is the Posey I use, and I belive you would like it very much. It is completely inspectable - and works really well.
http://www.cannonsgreatescapes.com/spectacular_2.html See the "Old Style roller buckle Posey" third item from the top. No need to gimmick it. Ark

OK, my final thoughts on this subject. Different context, but I think you will get the point.....
...from an unpublished work, Karrell's Kitchen Table I had just finished a wonderful routine from the Stars of Magic. It was rare I performed at the kitchen table, and I was waiting for Karrell give it a thumbs up or down. “Tripper, you are really getting into the hard core card stuff aren’t you?” I said yes. I was spending a lot of time with Vernon and Marlo, and was leaving the Royal Road to Card Magic (the book Karrell felt was the #1 book for all card men) behind. “You do plan on doing this stuff for money don’t you?” Again, kind of taken aback at the question, I said of course. “Ah, well, if you insist, then let me help you.” Karrell reached over and took my hand. He placed it on the table and began rubbing it. “Tripper, I am putting into your hand all the powers of the greatest slight of hand artists of the world.” He kept rubbing. “The power of Vernon, of Marlo, is flowing through your hands. Can you feel it? Can you feel it? Can you FEEL it?” He had put my hand in the table, and was rubbing the back of it gently. He then smashed the poop out of my hand! “Can you feel THAT?” Sure did! Hurt too! “Tripper, you just smashed your hand in a car door. Or some idiot did it for you. Point is you just hurt it bad. It is five minutes to show time, and the President, the Prime Minister, the Pope, your Mother, and Roy Kissel is in the front row! What now slight of hand expert?” I had to REALLY think about that one. “Tripper, if you are going to do this for MONEY, then you have to do it PERFECT every time you do it. NO excuses. You have to do it sick or well, drunk or sober, injured or not. No one in the audience cares about that. They want to see the miracles they have heard about. They PAID to see the miracles they heard about, and you better show them those miracles.” Over the years, being one of the few who saw Karrell work for real people in every venue, I got the message. While all the “card boys” were busting their knuckles to do things with poker size cards, Karrell always used Fox Lake bridge size, to give but one example. Let me be clear, Karrell could do all the tough stuff, but for his paying act he never took a chance. As the years went by I forgot this lesson, and moved back with the card boys. Then came the day I had to do close up at a VERY important Wedding… with a fractured finger! Be smarter than me, and learn this lesson the first time. |

Friends, from the bottom of my heart I thank you for your kind advice.
To Ros and Arkadia....thanks for sticking with me here. Mark Tripp, Harry has mentioned that you have written PLENTY of memorable information other places and I am thankful you shared some with me. Here is my result....I think I will go for the ungimmicked (I can hear the cheering) probably posey or whatever does not have the belly and side loops....My only last concern (and it is rather large since it is the reason Im buying one) is do you think I can hold something in my hand yet easily escape from this type of jacket?? Thanks again one and all

God-glorified: I don't know really. I belive that it would be possible. You are refering to a deck of cards I suppose. If it is inside its case it would be easy - otherwise you´d probably have to practise and see what happens. It also bepends on what hand you are going to use.
Someone should have a try... /Ark
