Anyone can. Then we can define "up". Bottom line, he does not "win" his time slot, nor is he in the top five, or even ten. Out of the over 100 cable programs shown at that time, do you really think a majority of people are watching ANY magic show? If you want to say "everyone" is taking about him, again, define that. The ten people who post in here? The "goth" folks you hang out with? Or the normal folks in mid-america who have no idea who he is. For over a year I have asked every child who comes on stage with me if they know who David Copperfield is. NONE of them do. Nor do they know David Blaine either. The grim reality of programing today is that EVERYTHING is a nitch market. You do not have the wide spread mass audience people had in the days of Ed Sulivian. What are the shows demographics? That can be looked up too. Finally, if you don't care about the camera tricks and the set ups, good for you. The second I saw them I changed the channel. I'd rather watch Barbra Eden do camera tricks. I watch a magic show to see a magician, not camera tricks. We ripped Copperfield for doing it in his early days, this is no different. More to the point, I know many people who hung with Bruce Lee. There is a story about the movie Enter the Dragon. In one spot, he "jumps" into a tree (obviously a camera trick). Bruce defended it saying it was a movie, and all chinese movie stars did stunts like that in their movies. A close friend to him said, "Bruce, you are not just any chinese movie star, YOU are Bruce Lee". When the movie opened, and that moment in the film happened, EVERYONE in the audience laughed. Bruce cringed. He said to his friend, "you are right, I wish I had never done that". Mr, Angel needs to decide who he is too. As for the rest of you, like him or not, lets discuss this in real terms rather than what I've seen so far. Mark Tripp |

Mark...great posts lately, good to have your input and expertise here at the Café.
I look forward to more tidbits of knowledege and history of people you have had experience with. I'm glad we have been on the road for the past 2 1/2 months (with another month to go)and have missed most of the rhetoric I heard was going on here. Was nice to drop in here and see your posts, Harry Murphy's success and the W.E.A.R. thread up to 18 pages. On a side note I think the story of Bruce Lee either is not entirely true or has been told a few too many times and has changed into urban legend. Maybe the advance screening of the movie is perhaps what they are referring to. It could not have been at the opening of the movie as it opened almost a month to the day after the death of Bruce Lee. Bruce passed away on July 20th and the movie opened on August 24th. This takes nothing away from you contributions to the Café...just wanted to clarify your statement. Kevin

My source is both Bob Wall (who was in the movie) and Chuck Norris, but I am much closer to Gene LeBell who knows me far too well. I met Bruce about a dozen times in the early days through Ed Parker and Wally Jay. Wally and I go back too long to talk about as well. As far as the time line, Enter the Dragon was in the can, but not yet released, I think about six/eight months before his death. Again, this may have been a review, or even looking at the "rushes" which, as I recall, I think was actually what was refered to. I do know that when the film was released people did laugh, and perhaps Mr. Wall is adding that reaction to his and Bruces at the viewing of the rushes. After Enter the Dragon, Bruce went back to Hong Kong to finish Game of Death, and did get all the fights on film, when he passed. Thank you for keeping my facts in line. Yes, there are many more stories I could share, but its just an old guy rambling..... |
