As said before, I use a 1-10, with 10 being PERFECT rating scale. Just so you know as well NOTHING EVER gets a 10. 10 is absolute perfection, and NOTHING, and NO ONE is Perfect. 9.5 is my highest rating. I ONLY write 10, just to show how close something can come to being PERFECT. I judge on The Tricks, (Impact), Technique, Teaching Style & Understanding, and Video Quality, such as Camera Angles...ECT.
1) Ring Of Truth - I like the patter for this trick. I don't care much for the trick itself. Again with this you got a 50/50 chance of getting this right. You bring up 2 volunteers. You take off your ring (or any object I suppose), and they are to pick who will be a liar or truthteller or they both can be the same thing. Behind you're back they let each other know what part the other will play. Then one takes the ring behind your back, without you knowing or the audience knowing who has the ring. You ask like 3 questions I believe and you "Divine" correctly who has the ring. Again this and the Number Reversal I think are my Least favorites. I rate this a (5). 2. Phone Psychs - Now this I like A LOT, one of the Best out of series one and two. It is essentially a Telephone Book Test, But you predict correctly three things. (No Nail Writers are used either)...lol. You write something on one business card. Then someone picks a two digit number 1-5 five by putting their fingers up on each hand. You write something else down. A card then is freely selected. You then give someone a phone book. Let's say the person put up a 3 on one hand and a two on the other (32), you tell the third person to turn to page 32. You ask the second person the card they chose. Let's say it's the 4 of hearts. The person with the phone book then looks at the 4th number down in the phonebook. You read their mind, and write something down on the third business cards. You then number each card in how you predicted each thing. They all match at the end. This is a Great trick as I said. I've mentioned elsewhere where I hate Booktest that use complicated precedures to get to a Page and a Word. HOWEVER I like this one as it has Prediction, Thought Projection, and Mind Reading. It does take a little prep work, and hardly any sleight-of-hand. I give this a SOLID (9). 3) Word Of The Ring - I hope I'm not giving either away, but this is A LOT like Max Maven's "Isolation Gimmick". I LOVE isolation too, and use it, so obviously I like this. Banachek uses it as a Prection though. You take a ring, after writing a prediction and slide it across, up and down...ECT, across a book page. The helper standing next to you picks a large word within the ring (thats about the only difference between this and "Isolation"). Anyway the prediction matches. This a a very good effect. I wonder though who came up with this first Max, or Banachek. Maybe neither did, or maybe they both did independantly. I rate this a (8.5). 4) Number Reversal - This is a Mathematical type of trick using adding and subtracting. As I said except for "add a number" I really can't stand Math Tricks or the process of elimination tricks as you see on the "Touch The Screen" stuff on T.V. I just think audiences are hip to that, maybe not exactly but hip nevertheless. Anyway after one try the performer gets the number. I rate this a (4). 5) Stigmata - Someone chooses a card. You show your arm to be unmarked. They put their hand on your unmarked inner forearm. When they lift it, they'll see a 7, then you say it's the 7 of hearts. It uses no ask, but a red mark (nope NO markers...ECT) on your inner forearm. I played with this, I practiced it. I did it for two people and it just wasn't that strong for me. I rate it a (6). 6) Invisible Palmtop - This is a great routine, that I can seen be done very well on STAGE. It has the "Invisible Deck" type of patter. You hand someone a "Invisible Palmtop). You say it's a dictionary, of only words of 7 letters or less. They call out a page number. They then tell you their word. At the beginning though you have a small leather pouch on the table. You open it up, and you correctly predicted both things, the page number and word. To me I wonder how in the word that the method doesn't seem obvious up close, BUT he was upclose and got his audience. Again I think this is BEST for stage. I rate it a (8.5). 7) Picture Dupliucation (Stage) - This was a GREAT highlight of this as well. As the name implies I think it should ONLY be dome on stage, if not the working might stick out. Any someone is invited to pick out one of 5 different cards. They are asked to draw something they can make out on the car. Let's say the card says. "I Like Castles". The person would obviously draw a castle IN THEIR mind. You two then stand back to back, and draw out her "Mental Drawing". He also shows how this can be done for a Q & A act. I was surprised he pulled it off in such close surroundings. I love this, and the idea. I give this a SOLID (9). I like this DVD a bit better than one. It has AWESOME bonus material and of him doung stuff when he was younger such as buried alive, and the blindfold drive. It has lots of Q & A from Scott Wells. Again Banachek is one of the BEST Mentalist around. I rate this DVD a (8).

So your scale is from 1 to 9.5?
I met this chap at the Olympics. I said to him, "Excuse me but are you a pole vaulter?" he replied "No, I'm German, but how did you know my name was Walter?"

Yes and no. It's one to ten technically, but as I've said 10 is absolutely, 100% perfection. No one person, or thing is Perfect, anf that's a fact. Jesus Christ was the only Perfection. That's if you're Christian. Yes 9.5 is the highest you'll see me rate. Why to I put the 10 you ask. I do it so people can see how close to TRUE PERFECTION, they are. I hope that makes sense. Banachek Kicks Major *** though. Rock On, Ed, (Eddini).

Hi Eddini
The reference to the Spanish Inquisition was just me having a go at myself for asking stupid question – it’s from the comedy series Monty Python. Anyway never mind that – even though I find your insistence that you can never give a 10 as being a bit off the wall, I do want to complement you and thank you for spending the time and energy on writing your opinions on the content of the various DVDs. The more reviews that are available the easier we can judge not only what is worth buying but also what maybe suit our own style best. So thanks and keep up the good work! It’s very much appreciated. All the best Prof. Alex

I have the PSI Series as well, the only parts that I like are the coin, spoon, nail, and key bending. The whole mentalism to me is boring. I prefer visual. Everyone I perform mentalism to is not all that impressed, but magic is a different story. One good thing about mentalism though is that you are aloud to "mess up" a little bit. If your %80 right with mentalism, your still a good thought reader to the spectator, if your %80 right with magic....... well then you suck. Just my thoughts and no I'm not saying don't get PSI Series, its great for mentalism, and metal bending.
Magic is our art..... Protect it!!

Thanks for another great review. I’m always impressed with your perspective. I think it’s worth mentioning that the odds for Ring of Truth aren’t quite 50/50. Remember that you don’t just determine who has the ring, but also correctly identify who is lying and who is telling the truth.
However, I still see your point. The trick reminds me of these “Lady and Tiger” books I used to read as a kid. Also, I agree that some spectators will see number reversal as a mathematical trick. Banachek does add (pun intended) some really nice subtleties (pun intended again) to help disguise the method. The two tricks aren’t perfect but they both can be performed completely impromptu. Therefore, I am glad to have them in my repertoire. Thanks, Elliott |
