Most performances of Modern Art feature a small knife placed on the tray beside the cabinet. This doesn't really look very menacing, or strong enough to actually cut someone in half. I have seen one that uses a chainsaw turned on and placed on that tray. That performance was much more convincing. What do you all think? Does anyone perform modern art using something besides a butter knife to cut the person in half?

Best one I saw was with a samari type sword. I forgot who the magician was, though.

You have to keep in mind that the knife is gimmicked. that's why the standard knife was designed the way it was in the first place. If you are using something larger, if may be more akward in handling it. But I guess it will really depend on how well you gimmick the large blade or chainsaw, etc. Also don't forget you only have "so much" room in there, and using a larger blade may add some more problems to the actual operation of the illusion. I find the standard blade serves it's purpose, and it is much larger, and longer than a butter knife...lol
I think the Chain saw bit would only work if the chain saw was running, other wise a butter knife would do a better job of actually cutting someone in half. The samari sword sounds like the better idea of the two, but I really don't think it would add that much more if anything to the effect. But that's just my opinion. P.

Some have done away with the knife and used flash string around the affected area to symbolize the "cutting" of the upper and lower box.
