Jade, I was also wondering if you perform any close up effects, or do you stay exclusively with your stage material?

In other words, if someone approaches you and asks to see a trick, can you oblige them?

Yes, I do perform close-up magic outside of my stage performances. Corporate, private, and casino clients often request the intimacy of close-up work for their VIPs.

As with my stage show, I try to stay away from gimmicky, strange looking, magician-only props. I try to use things that people can relate to right away, like coins, bills, rubberbands, paper, matches, pencils, pens, etc..

Best Wishes,

I love the story about when Jade was working in a magic shop. Some dudes rolled in and asked to see the Linking Rings... she, being the wonderful person she is, demonstrated the routine.

The dudes then said, "No that's not the trick we want the one the guy on the street is doing, the one with the one ring with a big slit in it."

That went over my head. How can you do a linking ring with one ring?

He meant she did the ring routine, using X number of rings, but they said that one of the rings the guy used had a slit in it.

It's great to see you here at the Café, Jade. I've been reading about you since I first started studying magic.

Jade I was wondering what are some of your favorite close up and stage effects that you have seen or performed.

For stage, Lance Burton's levitation routine comes to mind. And my version of Blaney Suspension using a song called "Women's World" and the help of two other female dancers to pull the illusion off. It's a very sensual piece, about women living and working in a man's world and after a hard day of work (the girls are dressed as construction workers and silhouetted in the beginning) they still have to come home and be a wife and mother (basically a goddess...and this is where the dancers' construction clothes are ripped off to reveal a sexy outfit underneath) and take care of the sick and tired. The song and presentation of the effect is talking about the strength and power of women overall. It's acknowledging the fact that we have to do it all (women, that is). It's the yin and yang, the hard and the soft, the male and the female.

For close-up, nothing beats changing a dollar into a one hundred dollar bill. It's what the lay people dream about doing and when it happens right before their eyes, they're blown away!

Hmmm I do that $100 bill switch. It's kind of rudimentary since I'm not keen on the anticlimactic close I usually have to do of changing it back. It would be cool to just give it away.

Anyone care to share how to gracefully get out of this one? I do a very elaborate bill routine onstage (Bill to Fortune Cookie thread) but this has me stumped. Yes it is so strong, but I must admit I have no satisfactory ending.

Mike,

Borrow as *large* of a bill as you can, and change it into a $1. Even if you aren't motivated to change it back, your spectator will be!

(Actually I appreciate Dougs' email thoughts on this and hope you don't mind my sharing them, I thought they were cool):

Doug writes;

hi mike; I first saw this "reverse" sort of presentation done by someone else - I think it was during a magic special on TV a number of years ago, but I'm not sure.

To me, it's a great way to go. It's much easier for me to pretend something went wrong, then after a bit of by-play, bring back the original big bill. I was stumped just like you were with trying to justify bringing back the $1. My style is more comedic and less serious, so it works for me.

The $1 to $100 is still the best though, if you can stop at the $100. I'll do this with friends if I plan on paying for dinner anyhow...I'll look through my wallet and discover it's empty, then ask to borrow a buck. I change it into a hundred, pay for the meal, then give a dollar back to them from the change. Can't do this one too often, though, but it sure is a perfect magic effect!
