Nor would I look kindly upon coin rolls. Outside of the classroom, we could trade some tips. But flourishing while I'm teaching? Not in my classroom. Not at any time. I would consider it disrespectful of both me and the others in the classroom. I know that people pee in swimming pools. But they don't do it in my pool with my permission. Flourish till your fingers fall off. But not in my pool...uh...classroom. Jeff |

Lol I remember in high school I had almost the same problem. I didn't do anything in class unless we had nothing to do but wait for the bell, cause it was a distraction for others. It when I was in the library that I had trouble. I would just practice flourishes and stuff like that, do some tricks for people who ended up noticing what I was doing. Whatever teacher was doing their shift in the library always had a problem with what I was doing. Thinking we were "playing cards" or something like that.

I havent faced this problem thus far I do practise in front of the public ie on trains and things but then my view on that is I will perform for them so it doesn't matter maybe that's wrong and I need to re think it however I would never practis einfront of class mates because for me that's where I perform to most so I want them to see the new things and be wowed.

Cycopolos,
You make a few good points. But let me give you some advice: in the long run, it might help you more to know how to use commas than how to manipulate cards. I could be wrong. Take my advice for what it's worth. (It's free, in case you didn't figure that out.) Jeff |

IMHO You shouldn't really be practicing in class, you should be concentrating. You go to school to learn, not to practice flourishes. I think using cards in a class is unfair, since it will distract other people as well, both with noise and the movements you'll be making. It shows a lack of respect towards the teacher.
If you must practice, do something low key, using 'normal' props, e.g. pens, rubbers, credit cards... I think even if you were using a replacement for your cards, such as flash cards or business cards, the above argument still holds. If you practice with say a coin, I find that placing a book/pad of paper on my desk, reduces the embarrassing noise a dropped coin can make on a desk. I feel its fine to practice flourishes at other times, such as in breaks, just not in classes. Just my opinion.
I admit I was addicted to cards, but fortunately I am down to one pack a day.

Back in high school, I would try to write and pretty much do anything in class while having a coin palmed, usually classic palmed. It really helps you get good at coin palming and technique fast without spending a lot of extra effort

Now then, palmtreemagic, this is great advice. Anyone wanting to be a magician would be well advised to be palming objects all day long, in school and at the dentist and while kissing your girlfriend. Well done, Palmtreemagic!

I also had this problem. The teachers just would not let me bring my cards out even if it was a class break or something. It really anoyed me but I just waited.

Illusion and magic is the same, if it was possible to achieve the impossible by genuine powers then it wouldn’t be impossible and therefore it wouldn’t be magic. That’s why magic is an art; the art of creating the illusion of the impossible.

I find it also disrespectful to teachers and classmates. even if it doesn't distract the person who´s flourishing it could distract the classmates.
I was not the guy who paid all his attention to the teacher. should have done that. and about not practicing in public. I don't care. i´m not flourishing for showoff purposes. for me flourishing is a hobby. it happens very very rarely that I do this to impress people. but sometimes it happens by itself....for example I was playing with my cards in a train... and when I was about to put my cards away, an old man said "please don´t stop, I really like what you are doing there" and I kept flourishing for a few minutes. macc |

Me and most of my classmates are "A" students. I think because of my good grades teachers don't mind it so much when I practice with coins. I do not practice with cards in class though... that's a little too much. What is interesting is that every few months, my running club teacher takes us to 7/ll if the student's pitch in the money. If we do pitch in money it actually has to be a gift card to 7/11 because teachers aren't allowed to take money from students. My point is that if you were rolling coins in class teachers really cant take them from you unless they had no value like artifact coins...

If you're getting in trouble for playing with poker cards a good substitute might be if you ran to walmart and got some bycicle cards with a different back. You might get Disney, Batman, or Elvis cards. They might arouse less suspicion and they are easier to work with than the flash cards (they can be a whole lot more slippery). The only downside is you might look like a dork if you choose the Disney Princess deck. Then again instead of color changes you could do change the princesses dresses hahaha
That being said I am obligated to agree with the others studies come first. |
