I find it really cool that we as magicians spend hours and hours practising just to entertain people for a couple minutes. It's all worth it though

[Don't let that poor experience stop you from doing the trick, though. The voodoo needle is a shocker and can cause that type of a reaction. It's a "freak-out" trick. Keep pressing on with it. ] [... In a sticky stuation...]
Xiero (?) (sorry I'm bad with names and can't do the quote thingy) that's hilarious You can buy more of "it" at costume supply stores. |

I wouldnt have told her the secret. I would have just said that it was an illusion and that what she saw didn't really happen the way she saw it. But I wouldnt have told her.

I don't believe that you should ever have to reveal a trick. The best thing to do is just choose your audience wisely. Feel them out a bit and make your best judgement from there.
You wouldn't do the needle-in-the-arm trick at a retirement home full of old folks or do this at an eight year olds birthday bash would you? Unless, of course, you're just a bit twisted. |

Under any circumstance is it apropriate to reveal a magic effect, but exeptions can be made, although in your case I think the most apropriate thing to do was finish the effect quikly and get out of there as fast as you can....people tend to be even more amazed when you just walk out without saying anything after a BIG magic feat!!!
Don't stop!

I'm disappointed by a number of posts here. You were faced with a genuine dilemma:
1. You upset a stranger and would like to help her. 2. You don't want to expose magic. The first is a sign of moral decency in all people; the second is a sign of solidarity with the magic community. This was all complicated by 3. You were in an unexpected situation, and felt a need to act quickly. Frankly, I'm pleased that you took your moral obligations to the woman more strongly than your solidarity to the magic community. In the end, you might find other ways to have handled the situation, but given the details you have provided, you behaved admirably. John
