Perhaps I’m stating the obvious, but let me start by saying this: if you don’t like Jay Sankey, this video is not going to convert you. For those of you, like me, who like Jay and have found that a lot of his stuff plays great in real world situations, let me say this: I think you are really going to like his latest project.
I always read posts bashing Jay for just being in it for the money. I don’t buy that for one second. Of course he wants to make money (Who doesn’t?). And there’s no question that he is also a gifted salesman. But this guy obviously loves magic. You can’t fake the passion that Jay exudes. Maybe his ego does get the better of him at times and he releases effects prematurely. But he never stops mulling over possibilities. Like all artists, he revisits old ideas and constantly revamps them. I personally think this is a good thing. In fact, there are a couple of old ideas on this DVD that he has improved upon considerably. More on that later. There are 34 effects on this dvd. Here are some highlights: Change In Direction: Uses three business cards. Very nice effect. Easy to do. Based on a Paul Harris effect I am not familiar with. Perennial: Simple but effective wooden matches jumping from your hand to pocket effect. Uses his poke vanish which I believe first appeared on his No Card Tricks video. He teaches a few different handles for the effect including a very nice routine where three paper matches disappear from your hand and appear back in the matchbook. I like that one a lot. Green Thumb: A card is signed, the magician puts a large tear in the card. He flicks it with his thumb and the tear is restored. Not the most amazing T&R effect but a good quickie. Partial Knowledge: Man, I didn’t want to see this on this DVD... because I wanted it for myself. I discovered this trick in his 2003 lecture notes. There it was called “They Know” and I loved it. I haven’t seen it anywhere else. Basically, it’s a terrific variation on Color Monte except regular cards are used. Fantastic effect. I do this one all the time. Pawnbroker: A multi phased effect where a coin and a ring switch places. Very nice. Heat of the Moment: This combines his effect Unleaded from the VBO video with a nice rubber band to pen cap finale. Double Trouble: Jay claims this is a pet effect and I can see why. Two cards are selected and lost in the deck. The deck is split in half. Each packet is then split and half the cards are turned upside down and interlaced with the other half. The two mixed up halves are stacked together and with a snap of the fingers the entire deck is all facing the same direction except for two cards; those turn out to be the two selections. I’m not sure why this effect is so appealing. Perhaps it’s the visual aesthetic of seeing two separate packets of card being mixed up and then joined together. I think it makes the effect look more convincing. Inside Out: This effect is on Revolutionary Coin Magic. Basically, a coin appears inside of a wadded up dollar bill. This version has two phases. It’s a strong effect. Heavy Metal Vanish: I don’t know if this effect has been released before or not. It’s a very strong retention vanish of a key. Anywhere Wands: Jay talks about invisible wands and how they are great motivation to go into your pockets. His thinking is nice, but this is the very reason I carry a “magic pen” with me. Solitary Confinement: A new and improved handling of Reenactment, which appeared in “22 Blows to the Head”. A spectator selects a card. Another spectator puts the deck behind his back, takes any card out of the deck and puts it into the card box. When the magician removes the card, it turns out to be the selection. Jay has done a nice job of making this a much better effect since there isn’t as much heat on your hands in this version. Departure Time: I love this one. Four aces are shown. The magician hands the spectator the deck and asks the spectator to name the red aces or the black aces. They say black. The magician reveals that the two red aces are in his hand. The two black aces are now face up in the deck. Very simple but highly effective. Jay says that he uses this as his warm up to Dr. Daley’s Last Trick. Seed Money: Good routine. But the reason I like it is because he teaches you the Gallo Pitch, a move that I was not familiar with. Great move. Floater: A card case or cigarette box sticks itself to your index finger. Good impromptu floating effect. Best kept short and done in the off-beat. Reversal Of Fortune: This is an effect that has popped up on a couple of Sankey videos. It was called K.I.S.S. on “Revolutionary Coin Magic”. In a nutshell, two coins, one in your hand and one in the spectator’s hand, transpose. I was always indifferent to this effect. However, his new handling adds a new component which turns this simple trick into more of a show piece. Jam Session: Fantastic coin into pen cap phase. No, it doesn’t use the striking vanish. I really like this one a lot. Magnetic: Basically, the old Magnetic Card trick from VBO and Sankey 1999. It’s a good trick, though. Perfect Switch: A deceptive coin switch using one of Sankey’s favorite moves. Somersault: If you like Outsider and Healed from Secret Files, you might like this very visual Triumph effect. Here and Gone: Multi-phased coin effect. Good stuff. Apparition: I like this one a lot. Fun use of one of Sankey’s favorite card moves. This one would go over really well for a lay audience. Slow Motion #2: I am a big fan of Sow Motion Coins from Front Row Sankey. This is a slightly different handling using only three coins. And you end clean on this one. I don’t always wear shirts with pockets on them but if you play with the handling a bit you can get around this pretty easily. Under The Influence: This too can be found in his 2003 lecture notes. It’s basically Stirring Silver with a borrowed bill instead of a spoon. Somebody Else’s Money: Fun effect where a spectator selects a card and it is lost in the deck. An indifferent card is wrapped in a borrowed bill and the spectator uses this to stab the deck where ever he/she wants. If the spectator fails to find the card, they can keep the money. The deck is stabbed. The card is not found... until the bill is removed from the indifferent card and it is revealed to be the selection. This is a prime example of how Jay can take a very ordinary trick and turn it into someything extremely commercial. By raising the stakes of the effect, he gives it a great emotional hook. I will be doing this one very soon. Past, Present and Future: I don’t think most people give Jay enough credit for his routining and this simple mental epic presentation using napkins and a borrowed coin is a good example of how clear his thinking can be. What I like about his presentation is that he really justifies using the date on the coin as his last prediction. He has a person name something from the past, something in the future and then something in the present. Well what is the only thing in the present, in the room, that the magician doesn’t know? The date on the coin! It makes sense. Is it the most convincing mental epic routine you can do? No. But you could uses the same presentation with the mental epic method of your choice. I do like this one, though, because it can truly be done impromptu. Inevitably, people are going to compare this to Gregory Wilson’s “On The Spot”. I understand the temptation, but they are apples and oranges. Greg’s DVD is killer and not only do you learn some fantastic impromptu routines, but the video is also an invaluable resource for studying timing and misdirection. Jay’s collection of effects is just that, a collection of effects. Very good effects at that. He gives you tips on performing in impromptu situations but you don’t actually see him in action on the street. I don’t know that this video with garner the same acclaim that has been lauded upon Revolutionary Coin Magic; but it definitely deserves to be on the shelf of any Sankey fan.

Thanks, MagicChris. I didn't list all of the effects on there. The one's I didn't mention aren't necessarily bad effects, they just didn't stick out in my head. However, I think I did list the majority of them.
By the way, my dvd is defective. It won't play Underbanded. I am sending it back but I am curious as to what the effect is. Can someone tell me? It looks like a card visually changes into a selected card under a coin in a rubberbanded deck. Is it something like that?

Thanks for the review Cfrancis.
I am very curious about 'Solitary Confinement'. Part of the handling for Reinactment is rather awkward and obvious. I get around that by using my pocket instead of the box. |

It still might be awkward and obvious. However, I think there might be less heat on the move because of the fact that two spectator's do all the work to set up the effect.
This move has been used by many other magician's to great effect so I think it's a knack thing.

Even Jay's movements during the move look awkward. (To me anyway) Also, using my pocket leaves me a bit cleaner than using the box. (Nobody will examine my pocket)
'Reinactment' is one of my favorites as it is very direct. There are cards that spectators pick more commonly than others anyway, so I might use them most of the time. I've had direct hits by using this method. When this happens, you can milk this small miracle for all is worth! I will definitely get this DVD. |

Sounds good....I don't recall a negative review of Sankey videos yet.......However, his marketed effects, well.... ..

Thanks for posting that. I picked this DVD up a few weeks ago. Getting back into magic after a long hiatus and Sankey's stuff seemed to be everywhere, so I thought I'd pick up one item and see what he was all about. I agree that there is some good stuff here although, honestly, Sankey's annoyingly comedic persona is not for me. Also, as you say, the guy is certainly enthusiastic, and I got kind of bored that he gives every single effect the same hyped-up pitch as "his favorite." That said, I am going back to look at the DVD again with some of your picks in mind. (Funnily, the thing I liked the most first time around was the lamest -- that impromptu object levitation...)

Yes. Pawnbroker is a very nice transpostion effect. I use variations of Here and Gone all the time in my restaurant work. All you need is a single borrowed coin. Nothing revoluationary in either of the routines but the way they are structured is very nice.
BTW, one thing irks me about the review I wrote last year: I was very familiar with the Gallo Pitch. For some reason, I had forgotten about it. My poor brain...

Where can I learn the coin vanish used in Inside Out, the effect where the coin appears in the crumpled bill?

Do you mean the Messiah Vanish he uses at the begining of the routine. It's on a lot of his other dvds include "Greatest Hits." However, it's an old move. You can find it in Bobo.

Sometimes I don't like the quality of the DVD itself, it just looks like a DVD-R which burned by using a PC.

The quality of the picture is okay but nothing great. I personally don't understand people's problems with DVD-R. Maybe I just don't know enough about it. But it's a magic video, not a movie. What's wrong with DVD-R?

The commercially burned process is an entirely different process than that used in the home-burned varieties. The commercial DVDs are extremely stable and long lasting; the home-burned varieties apparently are not. I wish I could remember where I read this article. The little that I've heard about the whole DVD-R situation is that the rapid disintigration rate is actually not true. A DVD-R can last a long time. But then again, I'm no techie. Just something that someone who knows more about it than I do told me.
