Hi,
I'm new to magic and need help to learn the "Elmsley count". I think it is also called the "ghost count". Can someone tell me a good DVD or book to learn this from? Thanx |

"Counts,Cuts,Moves and Subtleties" by Jerry Mentzer is an inexpensive must have book for beginners. http://www.magicmethodsonline.com Every major count is taught as well as other important stuff. Look under Card magic books.

I'm sure it's in one of the Elmsley books, but since I don't have them, I can't tell you which. Anyone know?
They're full of great stuff from what I've seen. Grant |

Quote: Yes, it's in Volume I. I have this book and it's excellent. The original 4 Card trick is excellent and his original "Ghost Count" is explained in full detail. Many other of his classic close-up magic(other than cards) is included also. Volume II is out of print sadly.

It helps if you practice the real count of four cards for this, it really helps to learn it so it is natural.
Thoughts on this? You should probably also jordan count while practicing too!!!! |

Do a search for Elmsley Count/Ghost count. There is a very extensive thread on this. It offers help and tips.

After I learned it, it helped me to learn to do it without looking. Kind of like doing a pass. Look and talk to whomever you're doing the trick for. Hope that helps.

Check out Dai Vernon's Inner Secrets of Card Magic by Lewis Ganson. The Elmsley Count is described in a classic trick called "Twisting the Aces".

I would concure with Daegs, once you learn the count use mirror practice so that you can't tell the difference between 4 an 3as4. They should look the exact same no hesitations or breaks.

I'm going to suggest Richard Kaufmans video of "Card Control". It contains good close-ups of other false counts and other basic sleights as well. Kaufman also does it slow and steady and above all ... natural.
you can purchase a packet trick called 'twisted sister' which has a little booklet containing the elmsley count (optional for the trick). Once you get the hang of this false count, you'll be able to do countless tricks. have fun |

Techno Card Magic deals with a new handling which is far more deceptive than the "in the finger tips" grip most people use and is so unnatural.

Quote: That's a matter of opinion and deception is in the hands of the performer. I learned the method that Dai Vernon taught in his classic "Twisting The Aces" and have deceived many with that method. In "The Collected Works of Alex Elmsley" Vol.I, the first chapter is devoted to the chronological developement of the "Ghost Count" which BTW, is the first name of the sleight. In this method Elmsley holds the packet in a left hand "pinch grip" and counts the cards into his right hand but in a modified mechanics grip. Daniel Rhod the author of "Techno Card Magic" a book that I also own, explains the alternative method in which incidentally Ed Marlo developed. Here the cards are basically handled the opposite way. BTW, Dai Vernon used the "pinch grip" because he felt it looked more natural after the "twisting" motion was performed and the cards ended up at the fingertips. I can do both methods and have no problem, but if I had to choose only one, I'd stick with the 1st method I learned, it's natural with me after all these years. But since a magician's role is to deceive, technique is secondary to performance and must be adaptable to the situation at hand. So that being said, like the old adage says, "there's more than 1 way to skin a cat". Use what is natural for you and works for you and don't worry about what one says about the other or this is better than that.

I'd suggest getting the card effect Queens Out Of Control - it's a super cool trick and the bonus is that you get to learn everything there is about Elmsley Count. Take a look at this link.

Brad Burt's Packet trick sleights video tape along with the above mentioned Counts Cuts book helped me out a lot in learning this sleight. Make sure you have a good deck of cards, a newer one, not the old beat up deck.
