I personally have not used a wand with the cups and balls. The routine I first learned was Mendoza's which didn't use a wand and utlized a combo cup set. I have recently aquired a new set of cups and am learning a new c&b routine that does use a wand. I look forward to the experience.

I watched the video of Michael Skinner on the tonight show again last night. Heres the deal;
When they go to the table Michael says "the difference in my magic is that I can go into anyones house and do magic with borrowed items. Teacups, a glass, a knife (as he casually points to the stuff on the table) whatever is handy." Here I'll show you what I mean with some coins. He then does a version of "Flying Eagles". Then he says "Let me show you something else" and does the C&B with the teacups. He dosen't say "now I'm going to do a version of the C&B trick", he dosen't make any mention of the knife as a wand, dosen't try to justify the stuff. He just does it. At no time does he make a big deal out of the props. It's a good thing to watch because it's all set up very subtley. I'm sure for the people at the table and the audience there is not one thought of the knife or magic wands or anything like that. I think that's all magicians thinking. It simply comes off as a man doing miracles with completely ordinary objects. I think we over analayze these things sometimes. But I urge people to watch this piece, it makes perfect sense. The props are perfect for the routine and I am convinced that a formal wand would only detract from the performance. At best it wouldn't make any difference. It certainly would add nothing. In this routine, this performance,the knife is the correct thing to use. No doubt in my mind. Vandy

I am working on a stand up version of my routine which will be done from a pouch. (Thanks to Frank Starsinic for a wonderful pouch.) I hadn't thought about using a wand, but perhaps I'll play with it again after reading this thread. Denny Loomis

John Shryock has a nice mini cups and balls routine which does not use a wand on his Live at Caesars Magical Empire DVD.

John Shryock has an even better one that does use a wand that he performs to classical music. Very nice!

I've been playing with a laser-pointer as a wand for a while.
Though not always practical in handling I think the idea is intriguing. A laser can blind you (Lennart Green), it can "desintegrate matter" and it can burn a hole thru a cup. It looks great in table-magic situations, is smaller than a wand. And the laser dot can define the magic-moment very nice. What do you think?

My 2 cents.
Been doing the cups for a long time. Initially I used a wand. However, as some time passed the wand got in the way. It was only used for some stunts anyway. I felt having the audience focus on three balls, three cups, two hands was enough. Never missed it. Al Schneider

I want to thank everyone who has responded here...Whether they are Pro or Con Wand.
It's in the diversity of opinions and historical reference that I can now draw a conclusion based on my own digestion of all of the source material provided. Thank you. I now feel confident that when I present my C&B routine (whether it uses a wand or not) it will be well thought out and true to my own desires as a fledgling magician. This is truly a community filled with thoughtful and intelligent folks... We are fortunate to have a place such as this to grow....Kudos Steve Brooks and thanks. Sincerely, Professor Piper (a.k.a.
