Besides magic, my other hobby is boardgaming. I have a game called Perudo that is just begging to be turned into a magical effect. It's an excellent game in its own right and is basically the same as "Liar's Dice" if you've ever seen that one EXCEPT that Perudo uses different colored cups and dice.
So there are 6 plastic cups, each a different color and 5 dice for each cup that match the color of the cup. They look great because the colors of the dice match the cups EXACTLY. I would love to have an effect where I put 5 white dice into each of the 6 "empty" cups and suddenly the dice turn into the color of the cup they are in. Seems like a great visual effect. Or put 5 white dice into the red cup, and Hocus Pocus they come out red. Then I put the red dice in the blue cup...and so on. However, I'm fairly new to magic and haven't been able to figure out how to make it work. Switching 5 dice in the hand seems a bit dicey (ha, ha). If I don't really show the cups empty at the start would the effect be strong enough if I have a convincing show of the white dice going in? Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks. - Steve |

I didn't get any responses from this, but thinking about it more has given me a somewhat workable idea that may spur some creativity from others.
I found that attempting to conceal and produce 30 dice was beyond my abilities, but why do I need to use all 5 of each color? Also, I don't necessarily need to use all 6 colors, though I think the effect is strengthened with more. SO...what I CAN do is finger palm 5 dice (of different colors) fairly well, and do it sort of like Miser's Dream. Colored dice in left hand, I display the white one in my right. I "drop" the white one in the cup, swirl it around and it comes out red. I place the cup upside down on the table with my right hand to ditch the white die under it. Then I go down the line to each color, and effectively change one dice from one color to the next. This way, I can easily show each cup as empty before the change occurs. As I've been developing it, there are 2 problmes: 1) It looks unnatural to hold small cups by the brim with fingers inside like a Miser's Dream bucket, and 2) at the end I am left with 5 upside down cups, each with a non-matching dice under it. Any ideas for help with this killer effect in progress? (Ok, so it's not a "killer" effect just yet. More of a "flesh wound" effect until I can get the kinks worked out.). - Steve |

You should look into dice stacking, perhaps.
I have cups/dice and a routine on my website you might be intersted in. very dice-ish. :)

Thanks, Frank.
I've always wondered about dice stacking. I watched one video on the net of someone performing a dice stacking routine and while impressed, I never saw it as something I wanted to get into myself because it looked like it takes a whole lot of manual dexterity. Since I've only seen the one video, I don't know if it was representative of dice stacking as a whole. Is there a lot of variation in what dice stacking is and how it looks? I'll have to check out what's on the Café on dice stacking. - Steve |
