Can anyone tell me why dealers stop selling Daryl's Color changing knife set?
I looked at Daryl's site and they also do not carry it anymore. I have been wanting to get a set, could anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks, Simon |

If you can make your own knives, do so!
Even if you end up getting something else later, you'll be well rewarded for your efforts. I'd like to see how you do! I cannot imagine making a knife. Good luck. Post some pix when they're done.

Most of the knives I've see just don't look like something people carry.
I've seen BIC type lighters but how about a folding nail files or key holders that the key pivots into? These would justify a smaller size. What else besides a knives? |

I own a set of the York knives. They are a very good set. I find them less easy to manipulate than many others however. Since they are no longer made aren’t they a “collector’s item” as well? I use a set of Mogar's knives regularly. I hand the first one out at the start of the routine as I build my story. Never had anyone question that it was a real knife. It resembles many knives on the market today. I think it would be better if there were bolsters on both ends like the York’s or Merrill’s, although the Sander’s knives and the Tamariz’ knives don’t have bolsters at all. I stick for the most part with a stag & white handled set. Generally I have only three knives with me. Occasionally I will have a fourth with me if I think I will need/want to extend the routine. A lot of this is personal taste. Use what works for you. In high school I had a set of Merrill’s. I drove a chem. teacher crazy one day by doing the color change and dropping the knife on his desk between classes. This was before paranoia of all edged things ran rampant. I would come back at the next change, pick up the knife, change it, put it down and leave. I came back at the end of the day and he had one chalk board completely covered with diagrams. He explained that the knives must have the ability polarize the light they were reflecting back. (This was a black & white set) His diagrams showed how this could be accomplished. It looked like something from a NASA illustration. I asked him how much a set of knives like that would cost. He looked at the board, thru the chalk up in the air, and walked away. I also collect knives and have a special fondness for the CC knives. If you are considering making your own take a look at the Buck Lancer (305) or the Buck Companion (309). Any one that has handled knives will probably recognize a Buck Knife. Other good choices might be the Case Mini Trapper, the Case Canoe, or the Congress patterns. I am sure there are others but these are Knives I have handled. There are Case “Magician’s Knives” out there if you do a little hunting. However, it may be tough to get a color match on both sides. Of course, if you are making you own scales this is a non-issue. I really like the idea of doing the trick with a “brand name” knife. In my experience, every commercial set I have handled has been made of inferior, cheap, knives. I guess the emphasis is on the item as a prop, not a tool. That’s why in addition to my Mogar set I always carry a real knife in case I actually have to cut something. [bg] I would also emphasize the importance of maintaining color consistency on your knives. I paid a fair amount of money for a set of custom set that are made on Winchester knives. One of the scales is a little off and I can’t use that knife. I am still waiting to hear back from the magician/knife maker that sold them to me. Ah, well, that’s the risk of buying thru the internet. Quote:

I have used them to climax a routine however and they can be “eye popping”. Sort of the like the final loads in cups & balls. If any one has a set of Merrill’s, particularly the steel bolstered ones from the early 70’s that they would like to sell please e-mail or PM me. I keep getting out-bid on e-bay in the last few seconds by just a dollar or so. I would also be interested in hearing from folks looking to sell or perhaps swap their Sander’s or J.P. Jackson knives.
