Deep Astonishment II has a lot of potential for bizarre magic twists. For instance, the first two fortune-telling cards are found via "vibes" (yawn). A voodoo pk effect could fit in there... not to mention a PCT or zen billet tear at the start to get the magic name/ secret word, instead of asking out loud.
Anyone adding unique twists to the performance?

I have D.A.II arriving next week and am very keen to try modifications for Bizarre. Like you, the first thing that occured to me was to use a centre tear. I plan to also apply some of Knepper's "Mind Reading" methods using the peeked word as a final out. Should freak people right out. Can you report on any responces yet?

Brian: I love PK effects. Can you give me a hint of what you mean by a "voodoo PK effect?

Christopher: for DAII, the selection of fortune telling cards is by "vibes." I was thinking a good PK item, like a rune stone or something, could be used to indicate the cards.

Hi Brian,
If you are selling this as fortune telling, then the selection of cards should be made by the sitter. Add magicky stuff, and you could sap it of credibility. Personally, I'd be looking for ways to make the reading more powerful and legitimate, but still have the DA2 kicker. (I do wish they'd applied the methodology to the major arcana of a pack of Rider Waites!) Best, Neil

Hi Neil,
I actually re-pondered this one, having practiced it until I was almost sick of it. I came up with a mutual surprise version. "I met this old gypsy at Pike Place market yesterday... she seemed so sad I bought something from her just to help out. She pressed these cards and this envelope into my hand and said 'do NOT open the envelope until you read the fortune of the woman in red.' I protested-- 'I can't do fortune telling: I'm a mentalist!' " (Or the guy in blue, etc etc... based on audience.) Then I continue with the illusion that I don't know what's in the envelope either. I freak along with the spec as I deal the letter cards. This works for my style. In case some might mention that the last dealt card is supposed to indicate the envelope, well, this only reinforces that mystery, since that third card is the one she "chose."

Good one Brian.
I use a pendulum from Magickman to find the apropriate cards. the pendulum swings in a "no" for the cards I discard to the end of the deck (the cards later used in the leather fold.) and "yes" for the cards that they will read. acting is the key, as always. have that look in your eye as I say o'er again. also, I aged mine well, using some ash, a black marker on the fold, and the sidewalk to rub the backs of the "normal" cards ie book, envelope et al. |
