Or, someone creates a sppoky, theater like effect/routine and you report back here:
"Man, you should have seen John last night. He really spooked them. Ya,he "Parr'd his audience good".

I have to say that David Parr has really made an impact on me as a magician. (I'm not trying to blow sunshine at you here, David. But this must be said) A few weeks back, my fiance and I stopped by Magic Inc to pick up some back issues of magic magazines. While there, David stopped in and was bullied by P.T. into performing an effect for us. Well, david actually performed it for my fiance, smart man. You see, David is a nice guy, that must be said also. The effect involved three invisible coins and his left hand flat on the table. When the effect was done, I was floored. Downright floored.
As we were driving home my brain caught on fire and melted a little out of one ear from trying to figure out how he did it. I haven't been the same since. Now, last week, I was in Mexico, sitting on a beach, smelling of sunscreen and reading David's interview in Magic Magazine. Good article, by the way. Then, low and behold, there's the very effect he did for us, taught in the very pages that I was getting sand all over. The simplicity of it was astounding. Well, to me, at least. At that point, I thought to myself, "Self, you really need to tighten up your magic. Clean it up. Simplify it. Streamline it." Anyway, thanks David, for performing for us at Magic Inc., and for choosing that effect for Magic Magazine and for helping me shock the living heck out of several fellow tourists later that night with this awesome little effect. You are a credit to us. |

You know, Reis, the more I think about Parr's "Proof Positive" (the effect in the October Magic magazine) the more I realize that it is to "Positive Negative" as "B'wave" is to "Brainwave."
That is, it's a delightful reduction that really allows the performer to shine because of the clarity brought to the effect. Even if you're not going to perform it, it's worth reading the article for the study in scripting and minimalist thinking. And it's good to hear that people in the "real world" appreciate it too. |

Hello-
I've never seen David lecture or perform, althought I'd like to someday. I do have his book "Brain Food" , however, and think it's a terrific piece of writing as well as a first-class magic book. I've been performing "Werewolf" from the book, a routine which takes a bit of time to put together (you need to gather some props, most of which fit into a small 8" x 10" x 3" box) for a while now and love it. It tells a story, provides startling magic, atmosphere and humor all at once. You can even perform it for children, largely because the funny ending defuses the horror nicely. It's quite unique and doesn't drag the way I feel some "bizarre" presentations can. --------- Steve Bosque |

Reis, you are a gentleman and a scholar. It was good to meet you and your fiance, and I'm happy that I was able to alter your reality map for a time. The fact that you had to travel all the way from Chicago to Mexico to have the mystery revealed is so wonderful. It's like a vision quest without the peyote. Thanks for sharing the tale. And I'm glad your self got the subtext: Simplify, simplify. You should reward your self with cookies.
Gordon, thank you for your very kind assessment of "Proof Positive." I am honored that you consider it to be worthy of study. You are a scholar and a gentleman. Also, you are very tall. And to Steve Bosque: I'm always pleased to know when magicians enjoy reading my published works, but I'm especially pleased to know when magicians enjoy performing the stuff. I have much affection for the "Werewolf" piece because it evokes so many memories of my childhood. I'm glad you were able to connect to it as well, and that you're sharing that connection with your audiences. |
