I didn't know where to post this, so I hope it's in the right place. An issue arose lately during one of my discussions with a fellow magician. It involved the use of royalty-free vs. royalty paid music. I have seen a lot of posts concerning the use of royalty-free music and I understand and respect teh distinction that is being made.
But what I don't understand is how this plays out in the real world. If we are to use royalty paid music in our show, we are supposed to obtain the prior consent of the artist and pay a royalty fee. I understand that part of it. But how do other businesses like D.J. companies get away with it? I find it hard to believe that these little outfits are all calling up the song artists and paying royalties each and every time they play a song. Now, I don't have any experience with this type of business so please forgive me for my ignorance. Thanks. Kent

I'm not in the "Biz" but I believe they pay flat fees to the companies that publish, or whatever you call it, the music. But they do have to pay royalties. Even talk show guy's like Rush L. have to pay royalties for music snips they play. This is my understanding, and could be flawed. I would except rebuke if it were in the interest of edification.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

This has been addressed in the other posts you referred to. See the "Show Music" thread.

Actuall you pay the person or persons who own the copyrights..... which in many cases isn't the person who performed it. i.e. Michael jackson owns the beatles catalog
I'm telling you the truth, I swear....
