Okay, I don't get it.
The digits add up to 9 and you could say there is an 8,9,10 in the number. What's magical about that number?

Jonathan...You're kidding....Right? Your tongue is stuck firmly in cheek... Right? :o)
It's one of the first math "magic" tricks most of us ever learned...at the age of ten. (I hate mathematical tricks - Too complicated). I have a credit card trick that uses this technique to reveal the last four digits of the card number (1089). Needless to say, I rarely use it these days. Professional mathematicians, of course, regard this "1089 trick" as mathematically lightweight and of relatively little consequence. But I have to tell you this: if you first see it as a 10-year old boy in 1963, it blows your socks off. Anyway, my magical peer, I know you knew this...you just forgot! Right? :o) Skip

Jonathan,
I was clueless on this as well, but Google found me: http://plus.maths.org/issue31/features/acheson/ It is used as a Book Test here: http://cn.dk.com/static/cs/cn/11/nf/feat......cks.html You learn something every day! Thanks, guys. Yours, Paul |

I guess it depends on what and whom you grew up with. When I first read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe, it seemed that everyone responded to "Can I ask you a question?" or "The answer is..." with "42!" It was an inside joke among HGU fans. (Geeks...go figger!)
The same was true among the magicians I knew. "How much is the check, Bill?" "$10.89." "How many people do ya reckon are in the audience, Zeke?" "1,089, Amos." It was sorta like...you never notice yellow Volkswagen Beetles until someone you know buys one...then you suddenly see yellow Volkswagen Beetles Everywhere! It's just a common inside joke with guys I knew because it's such a stupid, gawd-awful, drawn-out, pain-in-the-tush trick. (But, if ya know a Hermoine Granger math-wiz type who's never seen it before...you can do serious damage to their mental status with it! heh heh heh!) Paul & Jonathan, welcome to the club! Skip
