Hey, I'm [very] slowly trying to get into some dove magic. I've always been really good with birds, and I've had a number of cockatiels and budgies over the years, but I'm interested in doves now. I still love my cockatiels, but I always try to keep a mix of bird types. My last budgie unfortunately just passed away tonight and his best friend (a cockatiel) is devastated.
My question is: Doves and Cockatiels eat pretty much the same type of seed, and I have no problem with mixing seeds. They have pretty much the same living habits, but is it a good idea to put 1 or 2 doves in a [rather large] cage with 2 cockatiels? My birds have always been accepting of other birds, but will this affect the doves in a negative way? Thanks for any help! ~Jonton

I have doves and cockatiels in the same aviary before and didn't have any problem. They might their own business.

I was told by the local exotic bird pros not to do this. Not that they won't get along but rather for health reasons.

DO NOT mix your doves and cockatiels in the same cage. Your cockatiel could hurt your doves by biting their feet or chewing on their feathers. I used to body load my free flighted cockatiel into a special harness many years ago.

Its actually the opposite for me. My doves are the ones that will hurt and fight with my cockateil. He just get scared any tries to fly away form them, but sometimes the doves will actually chase after him.

This is a case in which there is no question that Lou Hilario is correct. This would even be true with parakeets. Doves can push and that is about it for aggression. The cutting beaks of these other birds are deadly. For years we commercially raised pet store birds. Doves are no problem. But the others even after months together will single out a bird and kill it for no apparent reason.
Once you cage an animal, protecting it is your responsibility. Enjoy your birds. Bob Sanders Magic by Sander |
