It wasn't a job interview, but an important meeting with a real estate developer who owned the building, who had offered to help me make contacts for a job... It was a Monday, a hectic, hurried morning, off to the carpool to my temp job. Chaos from the night before when my wife was at an unexpected call shift nursing. I get to work, she calls: did I notice one of my shoes did not match the other?
"I do now." What to do? Hurry home, an hour away, to change shoes? Ask her to drive all the way to my office with the other? Buy new shoes? Or just accept the embarassment, maybe play it as a joke "Hey, it's Halloween. Just wanted to see if you were paying attention." Then I remembered MISDIRECTION and ANGLES. I use a fake pastic thumb to pull $100 bills from cigarettes-- surely I can hide my shoe? I was lucky: I had a large rain coat with me. I entered the meeting with the coat blocking my right shoe from my appointment. I kept my eyes on his and remained natural, forgetting the shoes. I used his desk to hide my feet throughout our conversation. Leaving, I used the coat held to the floor to hide the right shoe, half turning as I bade farewell. He didn't notice a thing (he would have told me). Now of course everyone else on the street noticed, but I still felt pretty thankful for magic.
