Every february there is a school "variety show" where there are various acts done, and this year I either want to do an elaborate stage act or a video. For the video I was thinking it would consist of me going up to people in the halls and showing them tricks. What tricks do you think I should do and how should I do it? I have never assembled a full video like this will be. The length is a max of 8 minutes.
Any help is appreciated, thanks! |

Do a VIDEO! that is my personal suggestion.
Tho I will tell you and I am sure people here will agree there is nothing like live magic. However, I know that for a FACT JUST ABOUT EVERYONE will want to see you perform right after they see it live so really you don't loose anything. My idea for the concept of your video is why not make it educational(so teachers love it and it's school friendly) yet fun. What kind of character are you? What effects do you have?DO you have a budget for buying new magic or are you sticking to what you have? My idea is yeah do it for strangers in the hallway during lunch but also try to get to do it for some teachers. Try to find as many interesting places in the school and DIVERSE group of people as you can. We know in high school we have the niche groups like the "punks, goths,preppy,etc..." so it would be neat to see an equal reaction and a message of equality and joining with people you normally wouldn't talk to. Magic can and will be showcased as a universal thing that can bring joy from everyone. Work on your patter and I'd hate to say it but do the blaine style. Also make sure you can get someone that is good with the camera. Specially someone you trust with the secrets in case you mess up. Aside from that I have many other Ideas. Play around with this give us more info and I am sure we can help out. Good luck. I am always here for private messages if you feel like discussion. You can count on me. Oh yeah it would be REALLY cool if you could post a part of it in a thread here.He....Another advantage of video. Have a good day. |

Last year I made a video for school. I did tricks that were extremely visual like back palming, lethal tender, snap change, some ace routines etc. Make sure you have good editing equiptment. Otherwise it won't turn out good at all. Trust me, I tried it with and without equiptment.

I would suggest you find a "video geek" (another student} and do the projedt together. After all, you can't film yourself, now can you?
As to material, do what you like best, or what you know best. Usually, they weill be the same. This is NOT the time to try out unfamiliar material, unless you want to look like a hack in front of the whole school. Ideally, you want to use people who haven't seen the effect before. Otherwise, their reaction won't be there. Unless they are really, really good actors they can't "fake" a good reaction on film. Good luck! |

I don't want to say the entire idea because I don't want it stolen, but...
Joshua Jay made a short 5-10 min video where he starts off by performing a trick for several groups of people. Then he does it to one guy who doesn't cooperate. The magician then goes home and deals with him via his magic. Very entertaining, shows your skill and it also works as a "theatrical" movie. Derek Merdinyan |

Thanks guys for all the advice thus far. I am best at card magic but I am thinking maybe that since it is only an 8 minute video I don't want that many card tricks because they tend to run longer and so far don't get as big a reaction as say a BOQ.
I have a student who takes T.V. at school and he is going to film so I am set there. The show isn't until the end of the year, all submissions must be in by an early date in february so I have time to learn new tricks and fool around, what do you suggest I throw in there? BOQ? Stealth Pen? Gimmicked tricks have gotten the best reaction at my school so far. Another thing to consider is that I have to expect that a lot of people have seen Blaine's TV specials so I am looking for some other cool tricks that he hasn't used. One side question, how practical is the fish production by Rich Marotta? I watched the demo video on that and was thinking if I did something like that to the whole Caféteria and put it in the video as my finale that would be amazing. Open to tons of ideas and have time to practice with a budget of 500ish dollars + Christmas is coming up so throw me some ideas! Cool idea by the way Derek I like the idea behind it I apologize for the jumbled thoughts and formatting of this post |

The main thing is that you feel confident with the effects I find when performing to your peers. In my experience they try and pick every fault and try to "expose".
If you feel confident with the effect in the way you could do it in your sleep then you are surely set to succeed. Just my insight Regards, Rich |

Definetly a video. find someone who has some experience with filming or someone with imagination. you don't want to loose the climax of the trick because your friend filmed the chicks hoohoos it could happen.
do the tricks that you feel comfortable with. you don't want to mess up either. make your routines short and to the point. good luck -Matt
