Anybody know of any documented plans for a very large blendo routine? I would like to produce a final banner that's about 7'x4' and I have got a good source for the required silk. I can model it after the old Rice blendo, but if any of you know a different approach that might work for such a large final production, I'd like to hear it. I've checked the Rice encyclopedias but found nothing that seemed to indicate problems or solutions specifically targeted at a final production of this size.
If you've produced silks this large, I'd like to hear from you. Thanks, JMT |

Joe,
I have NOT produced silks of that size, but wanted to comment. I think that the cleanest plans I have ever seen for a blendo were in one of the Edwin Hooper books... Edwin's Magic, not sure which one and I am not at home now. I had an old blendo built as in Tarbell/rice... the usual way. I never found it easy to use, very fast or very reliable. It would hang up. Edwin kept a similar design but left a side open vs the little ring or opening. It made it work about ten times easier and very fast. This seems to me that it would be even more important with the large silks. Let me know if you want more info. quack |

I adapted the standard Rice blendo for this giant silk bag. It has an opening as well as a cord that simply holds the small silks together in a bundle on the rear of the giant production. As the production silk is opened, the bundle is flipped over to the other side... almost like a "bill switch."
I think the opening would work better if it were bigger... but I'm not going to redo it right now. The show is tomorrow and we're going to do it as rehearsed with the bundle hanging on the back. JMT |

Hey Joe,
I used to perform a Giant Blendo routine. The routine had four 36-inch silks meld into a giant 6-foot by 6-foot multi-colored silk. It was NOT the typical gimmicked bag Blendo. Rather, It was based on an old (1939) Jack Chanin idea. Vanish one group of silks and produce the giant silk. The vanish is well covered by the production. The reason I used the Chanin idea was that I simply could not afford two 6x6 foot silks to make the more traditional Blendo. Jack updated his notes in 1951 or so and sold them as “Grand Finale! Updated or Silks at Your Fingertips”. I think that there is a new book out on Jacks life and works that includes most of his silk work.

With a blendo 7' wide you will need an assistant to hold it up. How about using your sleeves ala Dimmare. He did a stretching silk bit that could easily fit your requirements.

Joe,
Have you considered Duke's Dye Version? This effect was developed by Duke Stern and concludes with the production of a 50 foot long silk streamer (I think it was about 1 foot wide). I am sure you could do it with the very large silk you propose to use. |
