Just thought I would ask some advice on this issue. I'm new to dove ownership and want to start doing some production/vanishes with my birds. I already own a performance tuxedo and was wondering how I should alter it to facilitate these effects. Are there any video's or books out there that go over this type of thing?
I'd like to get some feedback as to everyone's prefered method, that way I can contemplate my options. Everyone I talk to say's get the Tony Clark videos. Well, I just took a look at the Tony Clark video's... holy cow... they are EXPENSIVE. On Tony's website he want's $87 for 2 VHS videos. I can't afford that! Are there any cheaper options to learn great dove magic? -Jlareau

You'll find in dove magic, that not much is cheap. The advice you have so far is good. In my opinion, Tony Clark has the best videos on the subject and you don't have to buy a series. Check out the dealers for Tony Clark's "Behind the Seams". Denny and Lee carry it for $50. This tape deals with the subject of clothing. General Grant and "Ice" McDonald also have videos covering the subject. Not to depress you, but after viewing the tape, you may find that your present tuxedo may not fit the bill.

Hmmm... Well it looks like I'm just going to have to wait and save up some cash. Just out of curiosity how much does a good dove harness/bag cost?

It all depends on whose bag you get but in general, figure about $25. There is a difference between a bag and a harness BTW.

Hi Jon,
I know that money is always a problem, but it can also be a blessing. My advice is always buy the best you can. Ask others you trust to give you good advice, and be willing to save up for the good stuff. It's worth it. A good way to find the good stuff is by being active with your local Magic Club, IBM, SAM. As far as dove duds go, I agree that Tony's Behind the Seams is great. Also General Grant's video's are excellent. Don't have a lot of money? Check out eBay's magic site, or another favorite is Joe & Christine's Magic Auction! Best wishes to another DOVE NUT ........ Manyfingers |

I'm not being rude here lareu but there is a far cheaper alternative ...it's ignorance. Trust me, T. Clarks vids are worth far more than he asks. BTW, I recently ordered another set of his jumbo card fan prod.
....$125.00 for left/right hand set...... that's a lot of dough for a pile of cardboard but always worth the money as their hand made and beautiful works. You certainly won't catch me investing the time, money, and re-construction of my own version of such - I would surely pay far more for them in that case. Also make sure and get a copy of Shimada Dove Vol. 2 video by Stevens Magic Emporium. Great original work by a great Master - Shimada. Randy Stewart Oh by the way Lareau, if you handle your doves as well as you do the guitar, you'll be great! Downloaded sample of band's music. I'm 34 now making me an 80's Metal Head aka Unmodern rock head ....Heheheehe..... and I love most original rock bits. Great work. Wow, a guitarist dove worker.... life is interesting. Look at that dancin' pepper.... it never quits Randy Stewart |

Thanks Randy!
That recording you heard is really poor. We recorded all of that stuff plus two more songs in just one day of studio time. We've gotten a lot better since then. I'll look into the Shimada tapes as well. (P.S. You got any original music to share? I love to listen to new stuff. PM me if you want to chat about music.) jlareau :bluebikes:

What kind of suit do you guys recommend? Like a sports coat? I have a coat but I don't know if it will work. Does the material have to be stiff?
Thanks Thayne |
Dave Scribner Assistant Manager Lake Hopatcong, NJ 4849 Posts |
Thayne: the type of coat you wear is up to you and depends on the type of act you are planning to do. Some magicians wear a full set of tails while others prefer just a tux. Some wear a regular suit. The important thing to be sure of is that when the doves are set, there are no bulges in the coat. After you produce the dove, the coat should look the same. I don't want to go into a lot of detail here on the forum but I'd suggest you get a copy of Tony Clark's video, Behind the Seams. He goes into great detail about clothing.

Thanks again Dave,
And I thought I'd tell you all that http://www.magicsmith.com has Tony Clark's Behind the Seams video for $25.00 instead of the retail price of $50.00. I'm going to get my copy today. And after I get that my next tape will be Andy Amyx's doves 101, after these 2 should they teach me everything I need to know to get started? Thanks |

Both videos will teach valuable information but definitely not everything. It would be good if you also read up some books on dove Magic like Encycopedia Of Dove Magic and dove care books.

I've mentioned before that I have not seen the Dove 101 video however I've heard good and bad about it. This is just my opinion but since you are getting "behind the seams" by Tony Clark, I'd suggest you get Tony's Unmasked videos instead. You should get all the information you can and Alex is correct that you should also get books, however Tony's videos will give you everything you need to know for starters. He'll take you right from getting your doves through planning an act.

I enjoyed Doves 101. It has some great ideas on it (splits & tail work), but for construction of the coat Tony's tape can't be beat. It's a steal at $25.

Andy Amyx's Doves 101 is a must see for any Dove Worker. Andy is one of the nicest guys in the business, as I own a lot of his products. I gave him a call yesterday as I was getting some things done to my tailcoat and he gave me a lot of help right over the phone. I also plan on flying to Cali and polishing up my act with Andy very soon.
If your going to do a dove act , do it well, and be prepared to spend some money. I have been working on this act for 2 years and it is know where near the grade I want it to be! Also, Bob Sanders and DoveLite Silks have some great prices m as Bob is a ball of knowledge!

Carl,
Is leveling with you about the costs of sewing when you have to buy it. In a pinch, ask to speak to the person at your dry cleaners who makes alterations. Some actually have costume experience! It's priceless help when you need it. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Another great set of videos to add to your collection would be Dave Womach's set. He has some great moves and gives some pretty sound advice. I've heard great things about Dan Sperry's various DVDs as well. (I don't have them yet, so I'd be a bad reviewer on the subject of Sperry's teachings.)

Don't forget to look up Greg Frewin's DVD series.

I second Greg Frewin's DVDs. Also I have Dan Sperry's Technical Tosses DVD and has a very good way of training your Doves for return Flight! He uses Two Birds in his method however I have been doing with one dove recently and it works as well just not as fast as the 2 dove Method. Dan also shows a few effects with return flight.
But back to the original topic Tony Clark's is the Best for Coat work.

Dan's DVD is a must-have. His training session is utterly informative.
