Hey guys,
I am putting some finishing touches into my stage manip. act. I realised I need a self lighting match to start the cig. part of my act. Now I have 2 choices, Auto Light Match by Michael P. Lair EFFECT: A match is removed from a matchbox and struck against the striking paper a few times, when the matchbox accidentally falls to the floor. The magician, spotting the matchbox on the floor, concentrates on the match until it lights automatically Auto-match-ic by El Duco EFFECT: Holding a match between your fingers, you rub the box against your elbow and the match lights up! Comes Complete Now I have purchased a Michael p. lair video and he teaches the auto light match. I love the method. As for the other version I know little about it accept the gimmick is visible the whole time. I was wondering for people who used this second effect from el duco if the gimmick used is very realistic looking. At times I will be preforming this act close up, does everything look cosher at close range? And for the people who have both and have worked with them which do you prefer, I will purchase both if I have to just a little low on cash right now. Thanks again guys, DJ |

Are you actually planning to do cigarette manipulations in these days of anti-smoking regulations? Where are you going to do them? Being a performer does not exempt you from the no-smoking ordinances. Also consider the fire laws.
I know Canadian smoking regulations were draconian when I visited there over 30 years ago. Has this changed?

Sage advice from Bill!
Canada now has very strict smoking laws.

I'm not a great fan of the el duco method. Especially in close up. It needs resetting every couple of times it is used, and for close up is too visible for my liking.

I know Canadian smoking regulations were draconian when I visited there over 30 years ago. Has this changed? The laws are placed by the municipality. Some cities have strict laws, others do not. A number of cities that do have strict smoking laws, have different laws in place for private functions. I perform with cigarettes as much as possible myself. But less so with lit cigarettes. The nearest city to me right now, does not even allow smoking in bars anymore. Any of the private functions I have been a guest to lately have all been non-smoking as well. Smoke'em while you gottem...Outside. But keep the smokes unlit while indoors. Sincerely, Wayne Stevenson The SpookClub |

I hate when this happens, I didn't want to be judged or analyzed, and I have been told of all this before! I now live in vegas bill. anywho, lets stay on topic, post those remarks in the "smoking is taboo" forum please.

Dj. This is on topic.
I'm not judging you, but giving you some advice based upon 35+ years of performing. Ignore it if you will, but don't be a fool. The best lighting gimmick is the one you make from a striking surface and a safety pin. It's good enough for Lance.

DJ,
I think the El Duco method is the best for this. I use it in my candle routine act. Just focus on the match and it lights. If performing semi-close up, you may need a tiny misdirection. You'll be happy with it. PM me if you have any questions. Haas

All the versions I've seen have some downside. The one that I think best produces the effect you are looking for also has some problems, but it is as close as I've seen. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the specific name of the item or the maker. I THINK it was Juan Mayoral, but don't hold me to that.
The downside it has is that it involves considerable preparation of the match. But, the upside is that it produces the exact effect you are looking for. You hold a match at your fingertips, concentrate, and, on your command, the match ignites. The version I'm speaking of (without giving too much away,) did use a battery and set up and you did have to prepare each match every time. The match was best taken out of your pocket, rather than a matchbox or matchbook, but you could secretly get the match as you searched for your matchbook and then simulate tearing one out and simply pushing the prepared gaff to the fingertips. Putting the book away, gave you access to what you need to cause the match to burst into flame. Maybe someone here can remember the specific name and help you out. I know it was not very expensive (less than $50.00) and am positive it was European. For what it's worth, I hope that helps you a bit. |

Hey DJ Trix, I have not seen the auto lit match by Micheal P.Lair so can't comment. However, I have seen EL Ducos version I have seen this demonstrated by EL Duco himself at a convention. Im sorry to say that if you want to perform this effect close up, then I would say no to El Ducos. I don't think the gimmick is suitable for close - up. I agree with bananafish, it is to visible.

Im not sure if I remember this correct,
I've seen DC produce a lit match on his fingertips. a lit match just pops out of his fingertips. Is this a comecial version or a selfmade item ? I have a basic idea how it works. :kewl: |

I have this, it works just as described.........but yes, it does require a fair amount of preparation and needs long sleeves. |
