I am curious as to what defines a Water Torture Cell?

Well, when Houdini built one, he called it that. This wasn't modeled on any real torture device. So if you built something that looks nasty and has water in it, you can call it that too. Okay, maybe we'd have to say that the escape artist has to go underwater while in the device. Houdini's had the ankle stocks, and the escape artist was lowered headfirst into the water. There are a bunch of these around these days, you can even rent one.
Pastor Clyde has a horizontal water tank that he used for "Burial at Sea." It looks like a coffin, so he didn't call it a Water Torture Cell. My point is that since the original Water Torture Cell was a fantasy invention for theatrical use, other people are free to have their own theatrical fantasies, using whatever language might be most effective. The good Doctor is right about the genesis of the word.
It has become a generic term defining a clear (glass/plastic) tank of water into which a person is locked in. They come in many sizes, from a fairly small box, to one taller than the person locked inside. While they are usually rectangular, there is at least one version that is tubular. They can be performed with the performer put in upside down or right side up. The performer can be restrained with anything from handcuffs to a straightjacket prior to being submerged.
The artist formally known as Mumblepeas!

Dayle,
I perform a display of "Chinese Water Torture" upon a bed of nails for extended lengths of time (hours) while water drops in same area upon my forehead. It gives one walloping headache in the end. I can't imagine enduring it for DAYS as history has mentioned. As I have learned , Houdini mearly chose to use the name CTW Cell cause it sounded "cool". Below is a website containing information about this subject and it's history: http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/Chinese_water_torture |

Dayle,
I know you and Richard did water related escapes for WEAR. I just saw Kristen's and wondered if you and Richard would post your as well? I saw the pictures of the Milk Can and the Death Tank and both my wife and I would love to see the escapes. DB |

Thanks for all the opinions! It's very interesting. Especially about the dripping water torture. Yikes!
We hope to have video/pic's back shortly and get them posted as soon as possible. Cheers Dayle

Get yourself a copy of Steve Baker's Escape DVD and you will not only see the best presentation of the WTC! You will also see Steve perform a (full view) water tank escape. A must have DVD for anyone wanting to see (real) escapes performed by the master himself, Mr. Escape!
