I see that there are several threads regarding the two dvds from Kidabra - Halloween tricks and Holiday tricks. Both of these dvds are excellent and will be available on my web site in the next few days - http://www.sillymagic.com.
In my columns in magic magazine I premiered some of the routines from the dvds- Halloween effects in October and Xmas effects in Dec. So here is my question: As readers of the magazines, and performers of seasonal material, would you prefer Halloween routines to be published in the October issue or in the September issue? I feel Sept may feel out of place, but others agrue that the October issue is too late to get the material into the show. Same question for Christmas in November. what do you all think? From a marketing point of view, it would be more beneficial to a professional performer to have related articles published the month or even two months before to allow adequate construction/rehearsal time before the routine(s) are presented.

I concur with Lyndel - earlier is better (especially if there is anything requiring sourcing and construction).

Hi David,
You pose in interesting question. Just before every Halloween Season and Christmas Season (Oct issue & Dec issue), Paul Osborne publishes his seasonal illusion designs in the Genii magazine. I love reading about them at this time because I am motivated by the season. I read every word, and study the plans. Never build them, but the seasonal printing is the best for the readers. Now for the Professional who makes a living doing school shows, Holiday Shows, and Halloween Shows, it is a different story. These professionals know they must develop the show prior to marketing. This would be in the spring time. Building and buying these effect would occur many months before the season. Schools and Librariess, many times, plan a year or more in advance. Some are now booking and planning the 2006/2007 season because the 2005/2006 year is already planned. (I know this because I was just at a showcase and this was said many times by interested attendees) This is the same for the Christmas and Holiday season for Clubs, Civic Organizations, Church functions, and Corporate Christmas Parties. (The 4 "C" Marketing groups.) These should be booked by September and marketing started in August. The Halloween season should be marketed in April, May, and June for the October Season. I do know you understand this because we have talked at KIDabra about it. I am posting it here for many of the readers to think about planning ahead. To directly answer your question, for most readers the September and November would be great months for those who need lead time, the planners. (Providing the issues are deliver the 1st of the month.) For most interested readers, October and December is best. For the DVDs, they should be marketed all year round. The Holiday/Halloween KIDabra meeting in August went very well, so timing was good for the attendees who needed fast new effects. The Halloween shows should have been in the marketing phase prior to KIDabra, and the Holiday Season just starting. "Seriously Silly" How to Entertain Children with Magic and Comedy By the way David, I finally have gotten some free time to read your new book, and I am half way done reading it. So far, every word is right on target and I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to entertain children, the principles are sound and accurate. The difference between you and I is you're "Silly Billy" and I am not. You're character demands you to act silly and I can visually how everything you say fits you like a glove. You get more laughs per minute than I, however, my character does silly and funny stuff but not to the great extent your character does. In both cases the principles applies accurately. The book has made me re-think of ways to step up the laughter a knotch or two. Thanks Dennis

I concur that giving the performer more time to be able to read the information and then take direct action, is in the best interest of magician and the magazine. In order to really read the information presented and then to have adequate time to rehearse and develop the routine to fit your unique stage personality, it takes time to be able to do this and do it well.

August or September would be the time I would like to see these things. I perform several Holloween show and October is to late to be adding something brand new.(or even an adaptation of an effect.) I am a creature of habit and must have time to practice to get a change in patter or story line down pat. But, if I was a hobbiest than Oct would be a fine month to publish it.

A lead time of 4-5 months is helpful. Time enough to do your marketing and grind the material a bit. Helps make it more yours and less cookie cutter.

We (as I'm sure do many others)book our Christmas shows all year round. Reading about props and routines in any month is professional development regardless of their seasonal affiliation. So, let 'er rip.

David,
I feel the sooner the better that these tips and more are published in your column the better. Most of the time when we receive the magazines for seasonal tips, there are only two or three weeks left to prepare depending on where you live. For a novice this may be fine, but for others anytime of the year is appreciated. Wayne... |

I say October is fine. That gives magicians 11 months to get ready for next year!

I would like a couple of months lead time, although even 2 months isn't enough time to properly incorporate a new routine. It gets you in a seasonal mood and thinking (at least I do) how can I be better next year.

Both of these products were shot in August at Kidabra. Both are really good and filled with useable material.
AS you know it takes time to edit and put tapes together. I don't think anyone wanted a rushed product just to have it in time for Christmas. I say you can buy these DVD's all year not just when you need them. By Halloween right now that way you can go ahead and start thinking about Halloween. Ken |

You of course are right. YOu should be preparing for Holloween of 2006 now. I know it takes several months for me to even adapt a routine.

That is why I tried to show the mennorah silks at Kidabra last year along with the Halloween stuff. It really needs to be published a minimum of 4 months ahead of time and preferably 6 months. The same for the 4th of July stuff.
I had one customer who bought his 20th century Ghost silks for next years show on October 31. That's what I call planning ahead. Richard
