Hi,
I'm new here but it seems a Slashdot ( http://www.slashdot.org ) style rating system for posts might be effective at the Magic Café. At Slashdot you are able to rate posts after you have made a certain number of posts (basically) on a system of -1 to 5: 5 = excellent post, Dai Vernon comes back to life to give his opinion 1 = average post 0 = soso post -1 = flames, offtopic etc. The default preference is to display only +1 and above rated posts, but you can set your preferences to see -1 and above, only +5, etc., if you like. The system isn't perfect but seems to work pretty effectively at Slashdot, and the code is available for free (it's called "Slashcode", http://www.slashcode.com/). My apologies if this subject has already been discussed; I searched for "Slashdot" here and didn't find any discussion of this. --William |

Technically there isn't supposed to be any posts below what you would cll a 4 in the first place. It isn't a site to be clever, make jokes, or innane postings. It is supposed to be one of the few places available on the internet where you can actully ask and receive a decent answer.
That is not to say there are not some that get through. Many post few staff. Flames are reported by most and eliminated quickly. The reason this is based on the concept of a Café is that while a public forum it is privately owned and certin rules of decorum are expected. It would be a heck of a good idea on some of the other forums - Magic Talk comes to mind. Frank Tougas

Hi Frank,
Definitely, a real human being reading posts that are reported to him/her as being flames/offtopic etc. is superior to a Slashdot style "moderation by points" approach. I forgot that Slashdot must have millions of viewers a day, and so the personal deletion of flames etc. must have grown into too big a burden for them. --William |

William,
If you see any posts that you'd like to give a -1 to, just report it to us using the button above the post (report this post!) and we'll take care of it as soon as we can! Personal service to each and ever member that reports!
